Musings Regard The OL

I'm one of those guys who is all shook up. If the season started today (thank God it doesn't), our two starting tackles would be Croston and Cannon. Their backups would
be an underweight tackle (Garcia) on NFI, a tackle on NFI for two years (Jelks), and
a mediocrity (Tobin).
But the season is not starting today. It's not starting for 6 months. 6 months is a long time in the NFL. Panic is premature.

Your logic is sound, although when you stop and think about Brady having the continuity and dependability of Light and Solder throughout his entire career, some level of panic is understandable.

Any way you look at it, Solder robbed the Giants with that payday. I think we could’ve justified overpaying a bit due to the lack of quality candidates and obvious importance of the position, and their offer likely showed that, but in the end I can appreciate setting a limit and not wishing to pay Nate Solder 16m a year to retain his services. He was good, but he wasn’t that good.

Too bad they blew through 65m last offseason like drunken sailors, but that’s a different conversation altogether.

FWIW, looks like most mock drafts have Miller in 2nd or 3rd round.

It's a weak tackle draft which means that someone is probably going to reach for Miller. I'd personally be surprised if he's there at 31.

Even if he has all the potential in the world, are they really going to let a rookie start at LT and put Brady at risk? I just don't see them reaching for an OT with that in mind.

Miller will probably be off the board before we pick in the draft. However Crosby should be there at 63.
Little scared of Miller. Injury issues. Some say RT only.
Rankins who we can get end of round two mighty be best pure LT in the Draft.
The irony: He is compared to Gracia who obviously , the Pats loved his talents.
The guy who can fall in our lap is Orlando Brown. Terrible combine. protected Baker Mayfiled blind side and not one sack. He did much better in Pro Day. Arm length and pure size will have edge rushers taking the subway to get around him. No sacks agaionst the talent he faced is pretty good.

Would Brown be a good fit for the Patriots? He doesn't strike me as a "zone blocking" type.

Ya know, there is so much pigeon holing in this evaluation process. One guys arms are too short. Instead of 34" arms he has 33" arm length.

Cousin look at your arm length. Is one inch going to make a difference? No it's ability and desire.
The next prospect has "no sand in his pants".
The next is he's best in a zone blocking scheme.....which is great if you run the ball 90% of the time. Correct me if I am wrong, but we were in spread sets 55% of the time last year instead of you traditional Fullback, Tail back scenario.

We weren't the highest.

Zone blocking?
Point being, this is a passing league. Worry about pass pro first and then the fancy zone blocking B.S.

I might not be the biggest fan of Brown but if he is so wide it takes another half second to get around him, I am good with that.

Look at the Guards in this Draft that are pigeon holed. Braden Smith Auburn:
Built like a bank safe with broad chest, hulking arms and thick legs. Weight room strong and field strong. Good body control into initial contact. Absorbs contact and starts grinding. Mauler with power at the point of attack. Able to fist fight in trenches and hold his own against power players. Has strong hands and can lock on for the long haul when he gets a strong initial grab. Good drive blocker. Guard with some emergency tackle value. Has upper body power to cave-in defensive tackles on recovery blocks. Has enough pure power to slow bull-rushers. Punch is adequate. 6"6" and 315 lbs.

Just saying it's want to , that beats he should be.

Here is a guy that BB should have all the information on.

D.J. Fluker will visit the Seahawks on Thursday. What a toy for Scar.

I suspect that Scar might be OK with our backups Karras (C/OG), Croston (OG/OT) and Tobin (OT/OG). All have position flexibility are OK to be on the active roster as backups...
We frankly have no idea with what Scar might or might not be ok, and if I were him, I certainly would NOT be ok with Croston & Tobin as game-day active backups, or as members of the NEP in ANY capacity...and they can take their buddy Thanksdad Ferentz with them too.

...In my opinion, the only possible starters at LT are Fleming, Waddle...
While I generally agree with the rest of the post, everyone really, Really needs to rid their mind of the hallucination that Fleming and/or Waddle are even worth discussing as possible solutions at LT here, protecting a 41-year-old QB's blind side. The ONLY viable candidates currently in-house are Thuney & Cannon.

I'd rather Fleming than an actual vacant spot, which is what we have.

If Kolton Miller is indeed unavailable at 31, then I'm taking Brian O'Neill at 43.

It's a crappy year to need a tackle in the draft. Garcia was arguably a better tackle prospect than any of them but Williams.
Boney Tony a better LT prospect than McGlinchey, Kolton Miller or Brian O'Neill? No way.

Not sure....his cap number is bleh compared to his offensive production...

Have you seen what TEs have gotten this off-season? Allen's numbers are mid-range for someone of his blocking skills..

As a #3-type, blocking TE, [Dwayne Allen's] run-blocking is a significant part of his offensive production. The Pats ground game in 2017 wouldn't have been as effective without him...
A #3 TE? He's not being paid like one.

Jelks has not been on NFI for two years. He only signed with the Patriots last year (May 5th 2017) . Please stop with your misinformation.

Why not? Matt Light took over for Bruce Armstrong as a rookie..
Solder saw time at LT and RT as a rookie..

Who said anything about "REACHING" for an OT.
