PFT: Illness making its way around Eagles locker room.

The Eagles have had two players on the injury list for "illness," one of whom (Jernigan) was still out yesterday. Very likely flu (or the roughly equivalent adenovirus that is also making the rounds this year - the latter is usually confined to institutions like army bases).

This virus might be adding to ‘flu’ misery, but you can't get the vaccine

Either of these can do real damage to a team. Being strong and healthy sometimes doesn't help against the flu - indeed in the 1918 flu epidemic that killed more people the first World War, it was the folks in their mid-20's that were most vulnerable.
All kidding aside, it's scary how many young healthy people are dying from the flu recently. I am buying hand sanitizer as soon as I touch down to go to the game.

I've read that hand sanitizers tend to do jack **** against viruses. Am I mistaken?

I'm like that guy who dosed himself with snake venom daily to build up a tolerance, but with the clap in my case.

You know that you can avoid that by washing your left hand occasionally.

Trust me. Good hand washing is important in stopping the transmission of a virus. I’ve worked in 2 hospitals for close to 50 years

hopefully they're hit w a nice short term case dysentery....

I think it helps somewhat against some viruses, but it's mostly intended towards bacteria.

Higher % alcohol content makes it more effective.

If only we can get the vikings staff to turn the heat up in the visitors lockerroom
Why stop at the locker room? Vikings staffers need to phone the Colts for instructions on blowing heat into the stadium, like they did to us in 2006.

The flu needs time to spread among the whole team. 3-4 days is ideal.

If it’s spreading they are going to have a real problem practicing, as mixing the healthy with those contagious could cause the entire team to come down with it.

McNabb will give the pregame puke ... er, speech. "OK guys, let's get out there and hurl!"

There are rumors that Nick Foles seems a bit scared according to sal palantonio. Not sure if this is true, it was mentioned on the eagles forum.

Scared of what? Scared in what sense? Need more context around this supposed fear Foles has.

Scared because the flu is going around the team? Personally scared about playing on a big stage? Scared that their team doesn't match up well? Scared that their team is unprepared?

In theory it should have some effect, but it's difficult to isolate the effect of any particular intervention on flu or cold rates. I would guess that at the very best regular use of hand sanitizer probably has some very marginal, practically undetectable effect, like 1 fewer flu episode per 1,000 human lifetimes or something. Perhaps meaningful at a population level but practically meaningless for an individual, like many (over-reported and poorly interpreted) clinical risk factors.

Then again, hygiene theory (which I generally buy) would suggest that regular use of hand sanitizer in a developing immune system (i.e. by kids) actually has an adverse effect through handicapping the immune system rather than letting it develop naturally, largely by letting kids get sick.

Are you going to sanitize the bottle of sanitizer?
