Patriots Pick Up Brandin Cooks' Option

That has to be considered a sign of good faith on their part or they have liked what they have seen so far?

Now they need to find a way to extend him another 3-4 years. I would love to see a Gilmore contract for him.
Really no reason not to wait at least the year. Make sure he fits before handing out more money. He's already a proven talent so the dollar amount shouldn't change much from now to next off-season so just be sure it works first.

It was a given. If they didn't do this "now" then that means they traded a 1 for one year of Cooks.

I also think it sets an extension up right now as they have delineated what he will play for the next two seasons, and they could guarantee far more up front now than he would make in 2018. I'm biased however as Cooks was one of my favorite players coming out of school, I just never thought they would ever have a chance to get him. Imo he's an All Pro caliber receiver and he's going to be a five tool player in this offense. I would lock him up long as soon as possible if possible. Unfortunately he may want to become a 100 million dollar player, in which case he will likely be gone by 2020, and that's if they tag him.

The reason imo is that the closer to UFA status the more likely they decide to wait and go unrestricted. I would rather see them treat it like Gronk and do it early so the guaranteed money is more of a lure to him. It's not their stands d operating procedure but I think Cooks is a special talent and want him here long term.

That's what I'm hoping, too: that they got enough sense of him from the scouting assignments (sorry, joint practices) with the Saints that they know what they have and are willing to give him a four year deal now.

But there are some questions about attitude so perhaps they aren't ready yet.

Well I mean of course. Belichick isn't giving up a 1st and a 3rd* for a guy and not picking up the option

*I know it was a swap of slots but trading that 3rd they didn't actually get a pick back because the pick was taken because of the stupid punishment.

It got a pick back, the #4 we otherwise would have lost.

This is just a formality that gives the Patriots control. They will likely work towards scrapping the rookie contract and signing a long term extension.

Nothing better than winning the Super Bowl, then crushing the hopes and dreams of the rest of the AFC East fans by winning the Off-Season (their only hope of of feeling like a winner), and becoming a better team than during the Super Bowl season.

I love being a Patriots fan.

I don't think it's a stretch to suggest that opposing DCs are going to find defending NE very challenging this Fall.

I have never seen them deeper and more balanced than they are now. This may very well become the best team they have ever had. Living in Maine I need to enjoy every minute of nice weather that we get but it's hard not to look forward to seeing this team play.

Says who ?

They have him for 2 years at 4.5 APY. There is no way that Cooks will agree to a new contract that will take that number in to account and be severely below market value (i.e. same as with Butler last year).
