Really no reason not to wait at least the year. Make sure he fits before handing out more money. He's already a proven talent so the dollar amount shouldn't change much from now to next off-season so just be sure it works first. Now they need to find a way to extend him another 3-4 years. I would love to see a Gilmore contract for him.
It was a given. If they didn't do this "now" then that means they traded a 1 for one year of Cooks.

I also think it sets an extension up right now as they have delineated what he will play for the next two seasons, and they could guarantee far more up front now than he would make in 2018.
It got a pick back, the #4 we otherwise would have lost.Well I mean of course. Belichick isn't giving up a 1st and a 3rd* for a guy and not picking up the option
*I know it was a swap of slots but trading that 3rd they didn't actually get a pick back because the pick was taken because of the stupid punishment.

I don't think it's a stretch to suggest that opposing DCs are going to find defending NE very challenging this Fall.
This is just a formality that gives the Patriots control. They will likely work towards scrapping the rookie contract and signing a long term extension.
