Report: Broncos to Pursue Romo if Released

The defense that won the superbowl was a GREAT defense, but the one they put on the field last year was good, but not nearly as good as the previous season, and who knows about this year, though I guess you have a better idea than I do.

So how about it, DPF. Is Denver's defense likely to be better this season than last, or not quite as good?

I am just trying to, from memory, think about the differences in Denver's defense the last two years. They lost Malik Jackson and Danny Trevathan to free agency. Was there anyone else? They also saw some younger players develop more (Roby, Ray) while Demarcus Ware seems to be finally playing like his age.

That defense was still pretty darn good and carried them to a likely playoff birth before the offense really imploded. If they had a good offense that could control the ball, move the chains decently, and give the defense some rest, they'd be a SB contender again. Of course, as bad as Manning played in 2015, he was still able to up his game for the two minute offense and could at least make a few plays that were needed to win a game; while Siemien and Lynch may be technically better than the old version of Manning, I'm not sure they would win more games considering they played their worst when they needed to sustain a long drive or score when it mattered.

I'm probably the last to know here. I avoid Donks news like the plague. Haha. Their strength last season was the secondary. I'm not sure they are losing anyone. If Ware doesn't return that will leave a void. If he does return how effective will he be coming off an injury? At 34 years of age. I still have nightmares about all the Pats losses here. Last seasons win was as sweet as it gets.

Denver would have made the playoffs but they had a tough division. The Raiders finally made big strides and will most likely get better. Denver needs a QB like Romo to compete in there division.

I am not sure about KC, I doubt they make the playoffs 3 years in a row.

But Romo does get hurt almost every year. I bet he doesn't make it through the season.

I'll find it hilarious if the Broncos get Romo, after previously getting Manning, and see Tony retiring in a year or two while Brady keeps chugging along and outlasting the two.

Houston and Denver seem like two of the same prototype of teams. Great defenses, okay offensive weapons.

Broncos have a crap offensive line though. Texans aren't great either, but they're much better than Denver. If I'm Romo, a guy who's perennially injured, that's key.

They're being linked to Calais Campbell.

Elway's style is top-heavy to the extreme. That makes the Broncos dangerous on paper, and dangerous if they can avoid injuries. Talib or Miller go down and their defense comes back to Earth in a hurry.

It's interesting to think of how the timing all works out for the Broncos to land Campbell and Romo. Campbell will likely sign a big deal in the early days of FA. Romo's release and the contract needed to bring him aboard both seem hard to predict at this time.

How does a team plan effectively to pull this all off - put differently, do they have the cap space to pull this off?

IF two teams are even moderately interested, DAL can't get a late or even late, late pick out of the deal?

I guess they need the cap space now instead of a long game of playing chicken.

DAL was linked to Malcolm Butler RFA interest yesterday in some obscure rumor site, FWIW.

They parlayed a dottering Manning to a title. Of course they would do this.

No more Wade Phillips. A rookie HC, a terrible OL, and a QB that's far more injury prone than Manning and who has never been anywhere near as good as Peyton, even in his prime.

The only way Denver will do anything noteworthy this season is if literally every top team they play suffers multiple injuries to key players, as was the case in 2015. Highly unlikely.
