In Retrospect, How Do You View The Collins Trade?

I still have no problem with it and still think they didn't extract enough value.

Paying him more than Kuechly is completely insane, but Browns gonna Brown.

It seems to have worked out well for the Pats, although at the time the trade was made I wondered why the Pats didn't just let him play out this year since it appeared we were in it to win it, rather than accept a ho-hum mid round pick. Except for the Seattle game (where as the poster above points out they D might have been getting used to not having Collins there), the D has played well. The only player I thought we missed last week was Gronk.

You are talking about 8 games of production and a big chance he is stuck with the Browns instead of improving a fellow contender.

Everyone assumes that the alternative would have been to let him play out the season but I think BB would have cut/send to IR him instead. Whats the point of carrying a player you cant trust to follow a gameplan and do their job.

If somebody had posted a poll before he was traded what can the Pats get for Collins in a trade I doubt the votes below a second round pick would have added up to 10%. I still think they sold low but am not disputing the need to trade him. Same view I had at the time of the trade.

Reminds me of the Lawyer Milloy cut. Shocking loss of an ultra talented player, replaced by role player (s) that resulted in an ugly defensive performance or 2 early on but eventually the defense gelled to be better than what it was before the move. Hopefully both are followed by a title!

Said at the time that I wish they had gotten a player back instead of a pick, but that was nullified but the fact we got Van Noy. The Patriots got a 3rd round pick right? That's about what a linebacker is worth. Jamie isn't a cornerstone player.

Liked the trade then and now.

Collins, more or less is the same player he was when he broke out against Indy.

Mentally he's late too often showing up on a play bc he doesn't trust what he sees or simply can't diagnose the play.

2 best examples being beat on a wheel route by a power back and being fooled by a geriatric TE.

His tackles have gone down each year and he's always been inconsistent.

He'll look great against Houston and indecisive against Buffalo.

Most on here just over rated him after not knowing who he was to begin with.

It is fair to say, there was a general level of shock when JC got sent to Cleveland, but it seems to have worked out pretty fine.

Hightower, Kyle Van Noy and Shea seem to have done a fantastic job and have brought an extra level of physicality to the position. True, Jamie was an incredible physical specimen, but it seem that Bill wanted to go in a different direction, maybe with a harder edge.

Has anyone who questioned the move at the time come to see it as BB just being ahead of the curve? Or do some still hate the move?

If it keeps Hightower and the secondary here, it's a massive win.

There is only so much money. JC has a ring and will now get paid.

As much as I doubted the move the day it happened...then liked it when Lombardi talked to everyone who would listen about how poorly Collins was playing since last year.
...then I disliked when it became apparent that that Elandon Roberts is JAG.
....but liked it when I saw how solid the defense has been playing.
If the pick is used on the next Shawn Crable, I will be pissed...but that's not fair.
So I guess I like it.
Whoa on the Elandon Roberts is just a JAG ... he is an undersized ROOKIE, starting and playing significant minutes. This is a guy nobody expected anything from this year. He has far exceeded our expectations and could develop into a long term starter.

Sadly, it's hard to know. I hope the Patriots don't miss him on Sunday.

Our defense is still susceptible to swing passes to RBs which Collins used to eat up and keep yards gained to a minimum. We haven't played an offense that take advantage of that but I'm sure the Steelers and especially Andy Reid's offense will do so if we do play them.
Very good point and that is what scares me for the Squealers ... swing passes to LeVeon Bell in space. Roberts can't cover him.

Collins was taking bad angles i feel like more than one person will be assigned solely on Leveon Bell all game.

Im weary of their tight end to he is healthy and can be a game breaker.

Except BB had already moved in Rodney Harrison. Always thought there was more to that situation. Milloy was seen as a leader, but often it was a leader of dissension and complaining. We forget the Pats weren't always a happy family before BB. I wonder if BB would have stuck with him without Rodney. The two playing together never made sense, they were the same type of player.

I did not like the trade then as I did not understand it, while I wish the Pats could have gotten more it is interesting to watch the once fabled NFL franchise in Cleveland, overpay for players... now it makes more sense in this Belichickian world.

Essentially trading Collins to Cleveland, kept him out of the AFC East and in the Cleveland system he will probably never reach his potential.. he had two sacks in 8 games for Cleveland, in a defense that ranked 31st....
