Jamie Collins - Secret Superstar

Collins is an eight-down player. At 6'3" and lookin' about 260 now with speed, he can be a real threat at TE in both the run and passing game. Enough with the Harrison and LaFell to TE threads.

Some comments on the comments

1. I went back and read about 10 pages from the link JMCOO gave us (thanks) and came away with the following impressions.

a. I was surprised, actually, that there were as many fans OK with this pick as there were. I mean, it wasn't like it was expected or loved, but at least in those first moments before the Dobson pick, my impression was that a bit more than half the posts were relatively positive.

b. I think the biggest mistake most of the negative commentators made was to label him a "work out warrior", whose main attributes were good combine times. They seemed to neglect the fact that he had pretty impressive production #'s as well. When you look at those production numbers and add the facts that his team was so bad, he had so many coaches and position changes; its kind of surprising that he lasted as long as he did.

c. I was a bit surprised to see ausie being the first guy to be fully on board with this pick. He is usually one of BB's biggest draft critics. Give yourself a pat on the back ausie. You nailed this one....right from the start.

d. DI was a **** as usual, and would probably STILL thinks he is right, even today. ;)

e. Sorry but I can't remember the poster, but someone wisely mentioned, early on, that Collins would need a lot of coaching before we saw the results of this pick. Another guy who got it right from the moment he was picked.

f. You can't call yourself a "secret superstar supporter" unless you have #91 as your jersey number.....and picked it before this thread started. :D

g. The link JMCOO posted to the draft thread last year is compelling reading starting on page 15.

h. While I was reading about the early impressions of the Collins pick, I couldn't help think about some of the similarities to the Easly pick. Both were guys with EXPLOSIVE and rare measurables, great production (when on the field), and significant question marks that dropped them to the Pats

i. If the 2013 draft class makes a reasonable 2nd year leap and Easly can be a factor this year, BB would have literally CRUSHED the last 4 drafts.

j. Everyone likes to throw Ozzie Newsome's name around like he was a GM they wished BB would be more like. Now I respect Newsome, but he's had more than a few misses in recent years and his team was on the outside looking in this year. He's a good object lesson in the "be careful what you wish for" adage, as well as a good exemplar of how hard it ism, even of the best of GM's, to be consistently successful in the draft.

Haha, people were saying he's Shawn Crable 2.0. What dopes. Deus looked like a fool, as usual, but that hasn't stopped him from his smug postings.

Not meaning to get in the middle of your beef, but in his defense I think he didn't mind the player as much as he minded the fact that there were certain positions such as safety that weren't addressed first.

I don't know if that makes your opinion change on any level or not, but it is worth noting, due to the difference in what he was upset about.

I don't understand the hatred of PFF on this board. PFF is fine, though you have to take their metrics with a grain of salt because it's just systematizing something inherently subjective. The people doing the grading spend a lot more time watching football than I do, and probably a lot more time than most people on this board, though. It's certainly more valuable than the talking head narrative-based analysis you see elsewhere.

I think they developed a bad reputation when they started coming out with the lists showing crazy players as the best/worst of their positions, along with who was the most valuable player, etc. The methods in developing these stats and numbers are certainly questionable.

That said, I do agree with you that everything needs to be measured on its own account and within a certain context. It is for that reasoning why I don't automatically refuse to click on their articles. In this case, I actually found it informative with the showing of the .gifs that proved Collins had some improvements as the year went on (or at least one really good game ;) ).

No one ever notes that Ozzie was a Belichick protoge`. BB was the first to note his talent and gave him the first start on the road to football Front Office stardom, after his playing career ended.

Let's not get overconfident with Collins ability just yet. We knew before he had great athletic ability and his flashing in a couple of games was surely a surprise to opponents, as it was to us but...

being a great football player involves consistent improvement and other teams are surely going to target him looking for a weakness. Right now, he's a fairly green second year player hoping to hold down a starting job. If he can do that, the ceiling's pretty high, obviously.

he walked into the perfect situation not having to start.minimal reps let him bypass rookie wall.as a starter tape develops n peyton has a chance to do his carving.with so much expectations it will be very hard for him to live up with them.he might be great but id settle for very good this year with a eye on his backup...or lack of

He will be getting a lot more reps this year..lets see how he handles it but i think he will thrive here

If his playoff run is any indication, then I'm going to love watching this kid fly around all over the field on Sundays really soon. I can hardly contain my enthusiasm about this kid and will be watching him very closely in training camp and the preseason. I really hope that the potential comes to fruition and it wasn't just a flash of "what could've been." Only time will tell, but I don't think there is anything wrong with being excited about this kid. We may be revisiting this thread in the Fall.

Consistency will be key.

He was incredible for 2 games last year, running on fresh legs while everyone else was playing at the end of a long season.

Can he maintain that play for an entire 16 game + playoffs?
