Bill Buckner passes away

The guy took a lot of unwarranted heat over the ball between his legs, and never seemed to catch any big breaks after that. And now he's died too young.

May God grant him peace.

Brutal way to go. Bless his family and friends. RIP.

His knees were shot, but Buckner was touging it out for the team.

RIP

He handled the ridicule as anyone could, embracing it with humor.

The game was already tied and the lead blown. The Red Sox had already blown the 86 series and that play was just the inevitable in comical form. I guess reducing your mistakes (or the heroic clutch play of the Mets) to one player’s gaffe takes the heat off everyone else.

Robin Williams committed suicide with the same illness. BB, one of my fave players from that era.

Such a good hitter for the Sox and that damn error overshadows it all.

It's really unfortunate that he will be remembered for one play. And what seems to get lost is: A) Stapleton should've been in the game at that point. Buckner's knees were shot. B) The Red Sox had a 3-0 lead in game 7 up until the 6th inning. Buckner's "gaffe" isn't remembered if they hold on and win.

But the bottom line is that the Red Sox have won four World Series in the past 15 years. Not only did they end the curse. But they proved they were the team of the decade. Buckner's gaffe should be a footnote. The Bruins choked away a 3-0 series lead in 2010. But it's largely forgotten because of 2011. BB had a bad day at the office in SB 52 (Or so media "experts" say). Ultimately it doesn't hurt as much because of SB 53. Winning, and Redemption, changes everything.

Damn, did not know he was sick. Dementia is your 60s is generally very rapid.

Not sure why the 2nd post was the video of the "behind the bag" but it wasn't necessary.
Besides, it was McNamara's fault for not putting Stapleton in as defensive replacement. In today's game he would not even have sniffed the field. It's a shame what he had to endure all those years.

WTF? Here is what I remember about Buckner. He's at the plate with two strikes. He swings at the pitch that would be a strike out, but the pitch is in the dirt. The catcher probably knows he's swinging because he had done this before. He "runs" to first base and he's safe by a long shot. RIP Bill.

never a fan of those uni’s. boston “RED” Sox but black lettering??? they were doomed...

Dementia is no joke, very sad. RIP

I didn't realize he hit .289 for his career, pretty damn good.

That one error wiped out a very respectable twenty+ year career. It’s a shame.
