Semi-OT: Heath Evans today out-benches every FB at the Combine

Impressive.

How many full backs even exist anymore?

Someone alert me when they start doing bench presses on the field during a game.

Word. I still believe that Belichick's emphasis on conditioning drills is as important as, or more important even, than most anything else outside of tackling drills.

This is silly. There are many combine tests that really don't translate to the field of play but the bench press is not one of them. What do you think trying to push aside an offensive lineman is? Or trying to block a defensive lineman? It's literally the motion of bench pressing.

Benching by bouncing the bar off their chest and not extending their arms all the way? Thirty times or more? Why not squats, or clean-and-jerk? Why not a heavier weight? I think there are much better measures of explosive strength related to football than bench-pressing 225 lbs. however many times regardless of position. But go ahead and call me "silly."

Kind of agree, when attempting to do what they need to do on the field, 225lbs is nothing.

Offensive Linemen need to stop 240-350lb human coming at them as fast and as hard as they can. I'd imagine you'd need a straight up multiplier of 225 to truly showcase the force they must exert to stop that.

For NFL athletes 225 is more of a show of endurance and tells nothing about your actual strength.

There isn't any standard weight you can use to show true strength because a 190lb Corner isn't going to compete with a 320lb OL when benching 350 either.

The combine is mostly a joke, it's really about the closed doors interviews more than most athletic stuff. You figure out a draft candidates football athletic ability by watching their tape, not by wearing underarmor and running a 40 yard dash without pads. That's a situation that will never be replicated on the field.

Just another event for the NFL to cash in on during the offseason. It only still exists for the same reason the draft was pushed back a month.

TV revenue.

I think bench press at the combine is about as relevant to football as the straight-line 40-yard-dash in shorts and standing broad jump. Not very.

heath evans is 45 so this is quite impressive.

that aside i still can't believe how many adult men can't tie a tie properly

I think Eric Davis sums it up well at the end of the video. When the point out Heath's 40 number and bench press would make him a top FB prospect and Davis responded saying "there would be a disappointed team"

Regardless benching 225 for that many reps is very impressive.

I think tying a tie is a fashion thing now.

At one time it was important. Not really anymore.

Looked like ole Heath could do the 3 cone in a half n hour.

The half Windsor never did me wrong.
Benching 125 would be a huge deal for me.
I am in awe of Heath.

It's a data point that shows some level of strength in the chest, shoulders, arms and your back.

As you say the clean n jerk or squat are other measurables that can indicate overall strength.

With that said I think we've all met people who are super strong in the gym but have no balance, coordination or functional strength.

Agreed. I don't wear ties often but when I did or do the 1/2 Windsor is all I know.

Heath is a strong dude. There is no debate.

Back in my youth I used to move the iron a little and at the gym I used to go this guy did some exhibition lifting. So powerful. Can comprehend it. That and a little juice goes a long way.

No kidding! A double-Windsor knot is the only way to do it. It's embarrassing to see even our political leaders walking around with crooked tie knots.
