Ok guys, its been a while so here we go.

Key Re-Signings

DT- Glenn Dorsey
Most probably consider Dorsey a bust considering the hype coming out of LSU, but he has been very solid, playing out of position in KC. I think if we can bring him in as a rotational 4-3 DT he could finally excel in the NFL and be a steal of a free agent class. He has a great anchor which he has already shown in KC, but with his quick feet and good hand usage I think he could breakout into the stud DT most expected him to be coming out of college.

Trades
QB- Ryan Mallet + 2nd (62) to Ari for 2nd (38) + 4th (100)
Swap 2nds and gain a 4th for Mallet. Maybe not quite the return we had hoped when we drafted him but still solid value for an unproven QB. Arizona is desperate for a QB and if they don’t take one early in round 1, Mallet might be the best option.

4th (100) + 7th (222) to TB for 4thth (109) + 5 (140)
Just a little manoeuvring picks

Picks

1. (32) - QB- Matt Barkley- USC (Sr- Team Captain)
Ok, I don’t expect anyone to understand or like this pick, but this is my guy. One of the hardest things in the NFL is to find a QB that you truly believe in. I believe in Matt Barkley. He has a solid physical skill set, but unmatched intangibles by any QB prospect I’ve seen since following the draft. He has solid physical tools and enough arm to make all the throws, but the character, makeup and leadership to be special. I have never seen a college QB with the same kind of pocket awareness that Barkley has. The way he moves around inside the pocket, is able to avoid pressure and get the ball out quickly while always keeping his eyes down the field reminds me of Tom Brady. He is also a 4 year starter and the first true sophomore ever named team captain at USC, so he is extremely mature and shows good leadership. I don’t know what more you could look for in a franchise QB. If he is somehow there at the end of the 1st round I would not hesitate to draft him. If I was KC I would draft him #1 overall.

Now you might think that taking a QB in round 1 is crazy, but I think now is a great time. I think the Mallet pick was a few years early because he will be a free agent the same time Brady’s contract runs out. Drafting Barkley now I think could be an Aaron Rodgers like situation where he sits for a few years, even though he may be ready now, but is able to step right in without missing a beat in 2 or 3 years time.

I know a lot of people will look at Matt Barkley and automatically make the Mark Sanchez comparison, but I don’t think that’s fair. Sanchez was a 1 year starter, under a different coaching staff in a completely different system. He also arguably had better talent around him, especially on the offensive line compared to Barkley this season. Add in inconsistency and durability concerns and Sanchez was a very risky pick. On the other hand Barkley started as a true freshman and finished with 47 career starts. He showed unbelievable maturity and loyalty with the way he handled the NCAA sanctions against USC and the mess Pete Carroll left. He is much more polished, better tested and better suited to being a franchise NFL QB than Sanchez was. I wouldn’t expect anyone to really understand this pick, but having watched him closely over the past 2 years I really believe in Matt Barkley as a franchise QB.

2. (38) - OL- Barrett Jones- Alabama (rSr- Team Captain)
Interior O-lineman tend to drop in the 1st round, so I don’t think it’s unrealistic that Jones is there in early round 2. He’s not as sexy as the likes of Chance Warmack or Jonathon Cooper, but I still think he is the best interior O-Lineman in the country. He has the versatility to play all 5 positions across the line, with the potential to be elite at either OG or C. He’s smart, battle tested in the SEC, well coached by Nick Saban, what else could you ask for. I love this kid. His foot injury could also impact his draft stock and potentially push him down a little further.

jones_zps86fc6eff.jpg

3. (96) - S- TJ McDonald- USC (Sr- Team Captain)
Last year I loved McDonald and had him as a 1st round pick. This year he has fallen a little, but I still really like him. If he is there in the 3rd round I think he will be a steal. He would add a nice combination of size, athleticism and physicality to the secondary, as well as the versatility to play near the line, deep CF or lining up against TE’s in man coverage. He has the experience, leadership qualities and pedigree that the Pats love, and I think he will be a very good NFL Safety.

mcdonald_zps5f0ff72e.jpg

4. (109) - WR- Da’Rick Rogers- Tennessee Tech (Jr)
This is lower than most people have him ranked at the moment, but I think the character issues will continue to push him down draft boards. Coming into the season I thought Rogers was the best WR in the draft, and from what little I’ve seen of him this season I haven’t changed my opinion. He is just a quality, well rounded, versatile receiver who possesses a good combination of size, speed and overall athleticism. I think he is a future #1, and in the 4th round (I would even trade up into the 3rd for him) he is a steal.

rogers_zps2e2fbb6b.jpg

5. (140) - TE- Michael Williams- Alabama (rSr- Team Captain)
Binky Alert. Michael Williams has been a binky of mine since mid-2011 and I have no reason to change now. I love his game and I think he would be a very valuable asset to this team. Michael Hoomahoweveryouspellhisname has been a pleasant surprise this year, but I think Williams would be a solid upgrade at a cheaper price. An elite blocking TE who has been underutilized as a pass catcher and also contributes on special teams. High character leader, well coached and loved by his teammates. You cannot build a better Patriot.

7. (202) - DL- Damion Square- Alabama (rSr- Team Captain)
No surprise with another Alabama player, I think square is one of the most underrated players in the draft. He is a tweener DE/DT, but I think with his speed and athleticism he could excel as an interior pass rusher matching up against slower OG’s. Nice work. Glad to have you back.

Some thoughts:

1. I've suggested signing Dorsey before. Like the move. Though with Andy Reid taking over in KC I assume they'll be running a 4-3, and perhaps they will try to keep him. I thought he wasted most of his rookie contract being used in a 3-4. He wasn't the top-5 pick he was hyped up to be, but still a good player

2. I'm fine with Barrett Jones in the 2nd round. Hope that maybe injury concerns might drop him further than 38, but he'd be reasonable value there. I like Cooper better, but Jones has great versatility, intangibles, and toughness.

3. Da'Rick Rogers falling to 109 is fine by me if it happens. Intriguing guy.

4. TJ McDonald may not be my first choice, but he's good value where you have him, and I would be fine with it.

5. I've always loved Michael Williams, going back 2 years. I haven't been including him recently because of Ballard/Hoomanawanui as depth behind Gronk and Hernandez, but my views on him haven't changed. Not sure how you pick up a 5th round pick from a 7th by moving back 9 spots in the 4th, but if you can do, then I'd do it just about every time.

I short, I'm cool with just about everything EXCEPT the Barkley pick. I just don't see the love, and never have, even before this year. Frankley, I'd rather have Mallett. And I wouldn't spend a 1st on a QB this soon. JMHO. Give me Ziggy Ansah or Jesse Williams, and I'm stoked.

Why do people insist on overvaluing MALLETT when it comes to draft picks? I mean really? If you were a fan of Arizona how would you feel if your team gave up picks 38 and 100 for this guy? Stop the madness people.

You get draft picks for backups that go in and perform. Cassel, Schaub, Kolb etc. Not for benchwarmers. See Brian Hoyer.

They aren't giving up 38 and 100, they are swapping 2nds and giving up a 4th. Mallet + 62 for 38 + 100

Not what he suggested. The proposed trade was Mallett + 62 (284 points) for 38 + 100 (640 points), which values Mallett around 356 points, or around the #54-55 pick in the draft, which is still considerable.

Ok guys, its been a while so here we go.

Nice work put in there.

A first round QB pick would cause a giant media storm here and nationally. It'd be interesting to see it happen - the whole offseason would be spent talking about how much longer Brady and Belichick will be around. I for one am rooting against anything other than the "draft n' develop" type strategy we've seen over the years... a low risk stance to take, I concur :)

Has Barkley shown a lot of durability over his career? He's started a lot of games, so I assume the answer is yes - but he's also been out for over a month with a shoulder issue.

Do you see Jones starting over Wendell at C or would you put Connolly at C and have Jones at RG?

Points wise its a lot, but I think it makes sense for a team like Arizona. If they don't like a QB in round 1 then their options are limited. I also think swapping picks instead of giving up straight picks also lessens the blow of the trade on their part, even though the point value is high.

For me its just a special circumstance with Barkley. There is no other QB I would consider in rounds 1-3, I just really believe in this kid. Durability wise I don't know if he's missed a start before that shoulder injury. I think it was just a freak thing and takes some time to get over.

In terms of Jones, I think his best position is C, but I don't necessarily think we would need a plan right away to draft him. Let it play out in camp and put the best guys on the field. One thing I love is that his ability to also play RT (or LT in a pinch) allows us to only carry 3 specialist OT's, giving us added roster flexibility.

I don't get it........swapping 2nd rounders so you can waste a 1st rounder on your next backup?

that's just blind wheel spinning and will set you backwards......

I don't get it........swapping 2nd rounders so you can waste a 1st rounder on your next backup?

that's just blind wheel spinning and will set you backwards......

Or you get your franchise QB for the next decade once Brady retires. I don't expect people to understand it because its my personal opinion of one player. But if there was a guy that you very strongly believed was a future franchise QB would you draft him in the 1st round? Its not drafting a QB for the sake of drafting a QB, its drafting 1 specific player that I feel very strongly about.

brady retires in 5 years and barkley will be out of his rookie contract anyway.

I like the dorsey signing.

Didn't TJ mcdonald get 3 personal fouls in one game?

Here's my idea on how to replace Brady. We enter the Summer of 2016 fresh off of winning our 3rd Super Bowl in 4 years. 6 for Brady and Belichick. Tommy announces his retirement and heads off to Brazil with Giselle for the Summer Olympics. White Wes and Vince retire with him.

That summer the Tea Party storms out of the Republican Convention and decides to nominate Bill Belichick for President. Flabbergasted, he accepts. The Russkis will really be worried about our spy network now. Putin puts Russia in Defcon 2 and enlists Ovechkin, Malkin, Kovalchuk and Yakupov in his new EOD skating teams. US has their seals. He has his polar bears.

A confluence of things happens at the same time. Ryan Mallett is arrested for having a Meth lab in his condo. Robert Kraft hops on a jet and tries to talk TFB out of retirement.
However, he falls in love with one of Gisele's friends and stays in Brazil a few months longer than expected.

Belichick names son Steven his replacement. Jonathan Kraft becomes GM. They sign Jamarcus Russell to qb our Pats.

Rob Gronkowski takes a year off to join Professional Surfers Tour. Someone spikes Ahern's brownies with hash and the league pops him for a year.

Patriot fans are distracted by Belichick's failed presidential run. Someone has to replace Obama. Amidst all of the distractions. The squad goes 1-15 and garners the first pick in the 2017 draft. There's your qb.

Mr. Kraft struggles with Portuguese and returns in the spring of 2017 with Tom Brady who wants to go for number 7. Belichick sends Steven abroad to further his education and the Krafts re-hire Bill. Spicoli..err...Gronk returns lamenting the waves and tasty brews weren't what he thought. AHern returns looking like Ray Lewis circa 2000. All is well.

Maybe, I've read a few too many Robert Ludlum books:)

@Wilfork75

Nice to have you back and mocking, Mocks are personal things so whilst I have to say that I'm not a fan, if you are, that's all that matters. I'm happy to give you a more detailed breakdown of why I'm not keen if you want but I'm not sure you need it. These picks look like personal favourites of yours and that's what matters.

FWIW I quite like the Rogers and Williams picks :)

Anyway great to have you back and mocking.

Nooooooooooooooooooo!

We've shown a distinct inclanation to not draft USC players. Now, we're supposed to take two?? GTFO!!

I don't like Barkley, but even if I did I wouldn't take him in the first. I think Brady will not only play out this contract but also an extension. Brady has shown that even at 35 he isn't slowing down.

The rest of the draft is good enough for me.

Also the last pick in the third round is 94, not 96. The Saints and Browns second rounders were forfeited.

Why do people insist on overvaluing MALLETT when it comes to draft picks? I mean really? If you were a fan of Arizona how would you feel if your team gave up picks 38 and 100 for this guy?

I would destroy a planet.

Here's a pretty damn good mock. Courtesy of Charlie Campbell over at Walters.

1. Jon Cooper - G - UNC - I don't think a need. Just too good to pass up.
Thinks he might be athletic enough to move to C.

2. Jesse Willams - NG - Bama Falling all the way to 60? Would rather have a penetrator. But
again, too good to pass up here.

3. Ryan Swope - WR - Texas a&m Pretty good receiver. Watched him a lot last year when checking Tannehill out. And, again this year with Johnny Football.
