Week 11 NFL and College Games - previews and predictions, picks against the spread
    By: John Morgan

Even though the Patriots are not on until Monday night, there is plenty of good football on Sunday. The Broncos-Chiefs are deservedly receiving all the hype, but don't overlook the 49ers at New Orleans as a late afternoon game worth watching....

I love how we get Buffalo and the Jets while the rest of the country gets to watch Baltimore and Chicago go at it w/60mph wind due to the weather there today. I'm pretty sure that would be much more interesting and fun to watch than the game we're stuck with

Isn't the Bills/jets game supposed to be bad weather too? There were some threatening clouds in the sky watching one of the countdown shows(can't remember which one I was watching lol)

    Re: Sunday Game Thread

I am glad to see that the FOX station in Boston switched away from the Giants game, to a much better game between the 49ers and Saints; the preliminary listings early in the week based on what FOX corporate initially gave each station had the Giants game on in all of New England.

I understand Giants game being broadcast in Hartford, but I find it ridiculous that they are considered to be a second home team any further north and east of that point.

There was a valid reason for showing the Giants game on a weekly basis at one time - but that was before the merger between the NFL and AFL. At this point 99% of those people that grew up as Giants fans in the greater Boston area have either switched allegiances or are dead. Any still alive are 80+ years old - not exactly the demographic that advertisers are trying to go after on Sunday afternoon football games.

That could be, but according to Stacey Dales I guess there's tornado warnings in that area and wind gusts are expected to be over 60mph for the Bears game. Would love to see how that affects passes and field goals in that one. :)

    Re: Sunday Game Thread

I don't know why USC wouldn't just make Ed Orgeron the permanent head coach considering how well the team has played since he replaced Lane Kiffin. The team has responded well - they won at Oregon State for the first time in a decade, and they just beat #5 Stanford. I know Orgeron flamed out at Ole Miss, but not hiring him could result in a fractured locker room.

The remaining Giants fans in NE remind me of those old Japanese soldiers that used to be found on remote Pacific islands wandering around still armed. They thought WWII was still going on 40 years after it ended.

    Re: Sunday Game Thread

Admitedly they ARE in our division, not that they have a chance to win the AFCE as long as we have Brady and 11 people uninjured enough to play defense. As you point out, the NFL has a fetish about NY. Look at how most of NE outside of greater Boston and Southern NH get the Jints shoved down their cables at 4PM.

EDIT: Just saw the prior posts re:Giants

As I wondered in a prior thread WHY? are the stations always broadcasting the Giants in greater NE? The AFL started in 1960, over 50 years ago.

    Re: Sunday Game Thread

The Pats had a game in Buffalo in 2008 with 60+ mph winds. Kicks were going sideways and it wasn't fun at all.

I'd really rather watch the Jets/Bills this week. I picked the Jets in my friendly football pool and if the Bills could pull off a win it would help the Pats get some breathing room for the AFCE. I also wouldn't mind seeing both teams play a brutally physical game. The Bills can be really tough to play at home.

I'd also rather see SD at Miami or Cleveland at Cincy than Baltimore at Chicago.

There are some pretty good NFC matchups today, but I don't care much for the NFC.

Doesn't make a lot of sense, although Connecticut, RI, and Western Mass are more or less Suburbs of New York at this point. As far as Maine and Western NH, I'm wondering if it's because that portion of the region has Time Warner while Southern NH, Greater Boston, etc. is on Comcast? Don't quite get the logic there behind that. Fortunately where you and I are we get San Francisco & New Orleans, which should be a better game.

    Re: Sunday Game Thread

    Cincy???
Are the parts better than the whole? No doubt Dalton has become an enigma. Can come up big one game and so very small the next...13 INTs + 4 fumbles....that's ugly. But I love the rest of their roster and the 13-7 win over NE shows that they can be a force.....and....they should be running away with that division.
Which gets me to coaching. After watching Hard Knocks......the coaching staff just doesn't come across as a cerebral group that can scheme to win.
I remember years ago NE was about to play the Vikings, a team that had great players but was rigid in their philosophy......you knew exactly what the D scheme would be on Sundays. And Brady was quoted before the game..."We are gonna kill them"...and NE did. One side refused to adapt and the other side could morph into any type of scheme necessary to defeat the opponent.
My point......Cincy should be better based on talent but their coaching staff is not up to the challenge of the weekly chess game. BB/Brady....12 straight years of winning records.......masters of the board most Sundays...with or without the talent. Incredible

    Re: Sunday Game Thread

Interesting that there were two stations that actually changed away from the Saints-49ers to the Giants-Packers. In both cases it was to see a division rival of the local team: Richmond (Redskins/Giants) and Toledo (Lions/Packers). Meanwhile other stations in Virginia and Michigan did the opposite.

    Richmond VA: SF-NO to GB-NYG

Washington DC; Boston MA; Dallas and most other Texas stations; Indianapolis, Terre Haute and Evansville IN; Oklahoma City and Tulsa OK; all Virginia stations; Harrisburg PA; Omaha and Lincoln NE; Charleston, Beckley and Parkersburg WV; Lansing MI; Bangor and Presque Isle ME; Salisbury MD: GB-NYG to SF-NO

    Toledo OH: SF-NO to GB-NYG

    Pocatello ID: MIN-SEA to SF-NO

    506 Sports - NFL Maps: Week 11, 2013

As an aside to the question of why certain stations broadcast specific games, the initial distribution is decided by FOX (or CBS) corporate. It is then up to the individual local stations to request a change, which is almost always granted. If the local station manager can't be bothered (or perhaps has an individual rooting interest), then the change is not made and what logically should be shown does not happen.

Would love to see the Bills beat the Jets today, I just don't have a lot of faith there. Although I hope they swoon because I don't want to see the Jets in the playoff picture. That's a team that would be frustrating to face again, especially in the postseason, because as we saw a couple weeks ago for some reason they still continue to cause this team problems.

Great points, but I know you're off a little with your math. I lived it.

A person who grew up in Boston as late as 1959 could have easily been a Giants fan, since we were fed their games up to that point and beyond. If those fans were as young as 10 that year, they'd only be 64 years old now.

The wise ones went with the Boston Patriots in 1960.
