Hey all ... I was just part of a group of reporters (including our own beloved SMY) that got a few minutes with Jerod Mayo here at Gillette Stadium. He touched on a number of topics, including what he wants to improve upon this offseason, his approach to weight training and whether or not he still considers himself a rookie. Hope you like it...

What a fantastic attitude he has! He's only been home ONCE this offseason, choosing instead to stay here and study film, work out,do whatever it takes to improve his game.

He also sounds like he's critiqued himself ,saying last year he knew the playbook but not well enough to react as he felt he should. He tried using his athleticism to make up for any mistakes,he says. Whatever he did must have worked, seeing as he was DROY!

Great interview, thanks for posting it Chris!

Mayo also says this about The Crab (and all the rookie LB's):
    Good times,I can't wait:D

I wish he'd be a little more honest (;) but, yeah, I love Mayo; he's definitely part of the solution.

Reading that - sounds like a Patriot. Humble, hard-working and ready at every moment to KICK YOUR ASS. Love it.

Yes indeed, we do seem to get some great players on this team. What an honest fellow, and a good head on his shoulders. :)

Here's a little information that I think hearkens back to what some of us were saying about playing the rookies at ILB last season, and the impact that had on the passing defense:

What's the scoop on Robert Ayers? I read that he is a projected 2nd round pick. Any chance the Pats could be looking at him? Jerod seems to like him.

Great interview by the way! Thanks for posting.

passing defense requires more than blitzing....in fact, pass rush is the easy part of the defense....at least analytically

Yes, but people were wondering why the team wasn't blitzing, and this is a nice window into some of the reasoning.

I would love to get Ayers but from what I have heard he will likely be gone before we pick I have seen him close to top ten......I think if we really want him though we have enough ammo to get him.

It sounds like his head isn't getting huge because of all the accolades and hype he recieved last year. It's great to hear someone as young and talented as he is and stay humble. It sounds like we have our next defensive leader for hopefully a long time.

Thanks for all the kind words.

Both SMY and myself commented on the fact that he's only met with Belichick once this offseason. Not entirely sure what that means -- Belichick could be busier with offseason evaluation, there's probably not as much hand-holding needed with someone like Mayo -- but it was interesting to hear.

Mayo is the exact type of leader this team needs on defense. As this team get older, the team needs to create young leaders who will take on the role as team leaders. As players retire (bruschi) and leave (vrable) this will be critical. I also look for AD to take a lead role as being a leader on this "d".

Odd, you'd think someone would have commented about that during the season. [IMG]

Some of us did, it's true. ;)

But, we were told it was all about how bad the secondary was. It's nice to see 'official' confirmation regarding the downside of the rookie LBs. I expect they'll be working hard to convince BB & Co. that they are ready to shoulder the full burden this season.

Sounds like a great kid with great work ethics and dedication. I look for him to be one of the great ILB's.

Mayo really seems like a best case scenario type of player... Not sure you could ask for anything else out of a guy like him. The Patriots were just really so fortunate to be able to pick him a year after going 16-0.

Mayo is the kind of guy who could be a Hall of Famer with his combination of work ethic and athleticism. Certainly, that is far, far down the road, but its realistic to think that he'll be a 12-13 year starter at linebacker for us playing at a Pro-Bowl level for at least most of them, a-la Junior Seau. I'm happy with the pick :)
