Hey all ... I was just part of a group of reporters (including our own beloved SMY) that got a few minutes with Jerod Mayo here at Gillette Stadium. He touched on a number of topics, including what he wants to improve upon this offseason, his approach to weight training and whether or not he still considers himself a rookie. Hope you like it...

It Is What It Is Q&A with Jerod Mayo, 4/16

Great stuff as always!

I love this kid ..(No jomo) .. Don't be surprised if this kid catches the league by storm this year ..

:eek:Jerod has a great work ethic. Great player that is only to get better.

What a fantastic attitude he has! He's only been home ONCE this offseason, choosing instead to stay here and study film, work out,do whatever it takes to improve his game.

He also sounds like he's critiqued himself ,saying last year he knew the playbook but not well enough to react as he felt he should. He tried using his athleticism to make up for any mistakes,he says. Whatever he did must have worked, seeing as he was DROY!

Great interview, thanks for posting it Chris!

Mayo also says this about The Crab (and all the rookie LB's):
On the bond between the younger linebackers like Vince Redd, Shawn Crable and Gary Guyton…
Most definitely. That’s the biggest area for improvement, from Year One to Year Two. That’s what we’re looking forward to. Crable got hurt last year, hopefully he can come back this year and prove the doubters wrong, because we all have a chip on our shoulder.

Good times,I can't wait:D

I wish he'd be a little more honest (;) but, yeah, I love Mayo; he's definitely part of the solution.

Mayo's going to be an absolute beast. We should send this interview off to Forbes:p

Reading that - sounds like a Patriot. Humble, hard-working and ready at every moment to KICK YOUR ASS. Love it.

Yes indeed, we do seem to get some great players on this team. What an honest fellow, and a good head on his shoulders. :)

How does it feel not to be a rookie anymore?
No, not yet. I have a few games to go before I have veteran status.

I haven't seen him as a rookie for sometime now :) Especially after the 20 tackle game :)

Here's a little information that I think hearkens back to what some of us were saying about playing the rookies at ILB last season, and the impact that had on the passing defense:

But in terms of getting to the quarterback, do you really have an opportunity to do that? You mentioned sacks before…
To be honest, I didn’t do as much blitzing, but hopefully, this year, my role will expand in that aspect.

Is that something that comes with knowing the system?
Most definitely. They don’t want to put too much responsibility on me.

What's the scoop on Robert Ayers? I read that he is a projected 2nd round pick. Any chance the Pats could be looking at him? Jerod seems to like him.

Great interview by the way! Thanks for posting.

i dont know why, but every time i see a pats interview like this....

it always leaves me with the same impression....these guys sound perfect, no complaining, not whining, only about improvement.....like role model athletes should be

and this guy has only been here 1 yr.....Belichek's amazing

passing defense requires more than blitzing....in fact, pass rush is the easy part of the defense....at least analytically

Yes, but people were wondering why the team wasn't blitzing, and this is a nice window into some of the reasoning.

I would love to get Ayers but from what I have heard he will likely be gone before we pick I have seen him close to top ten......I think if we really want him though we have enough ammo to get him.

Seriously? I didn't realize he was pegged this high.

It sounds like his head isn't getting huge because of all the accolades and hype he recieved last year. It's great to hear someone as young and talented as he is and stay humble. It sounds like we have our next defensive leader for hopefully a long time.
