Virtually every mock draft I've read the past month has the Patriots grabbing JJ Watt out of Wisconsin. At first I was pretty skeptical, but everything I've read lately indicates that this guy might be absolutely perfect for this team. 6'6", nearly 300 lbs, high motor, absolutely destroyed Big Ten offensive lines this past year, finishing 3rd in the country in tackles for a loss (21).

Sounds like an ideal 3-4 end to me. What do the rest of you think?

The guy is my number one pick...and I'm sure that he's the Pats first choice also*.

*Assuming they share my viewpoint in our team needs, and their 100-page assessment of his physical skills, leadership, and off-field profile aligns with my assumptions. And that there isn't more value in either trading the pick or drafting a different player.

So, in conclusion, there is about a 0.000023% chance that he ends up with the team.

I believe that Tom Condon is his agent. That sucks, because I like the kid too.

I don't think it's so unrealistic. They have to be looking at both Watt and Cam Jordan and if one of those guys falls out of the top 10, they could easily trade up without sacrificing their top picks. Given their history of picking Seymour and Warren high up, this is one mock draft scenario that's not totally unlikely.

He is universally beleived as the best 3-4 d-lineman in the draft and possibly the best one to come out in years for that formation. I wouldn't be upset if the Pats' drafted him, but sometimes the hype is more than the real potential.

    Rob0729--(or anyone else)

Have there been any draft picks at all that have been represented by Condon that have been taken by the team since the big blowout? Have you heard anyone (coach, player, owner) ever comment on the issue, then or recently? Could it be a bit of coincidence that a long time has gone by, or in your opinion do you think the relationship will never be able to be repaired?

In other words, is there just more 'hype' from the media regarding this issue, or are pretty much ALL or MOST players represented by him off limits?

    Thanks in advance.

The Patriots have not signed a Condon-represented player either as a draft pick or as a free agent since the Watson fiasco. Ian Rapoport says he has a source saying that the Pats don't work with Condon.

The more people speculate on this the more i hope it isn't true. It really is stupid for one to make up their mind before hearing the issue. That is what BB and Co. would be doing by refusing to sign any player not just watt because of their agent.

It also comes across as arrogant, like can you really afford to pass on players you think elevate the play of your football team because of personal dislike of an agent? On an issue that is no longer relevant?

So, in your speculation as to the relationship between NE and Condon it's NE who is arrogant and unrealistic? Isn't that prejudging in and of itself? I don't know anything other than NE has apparently not signed or drafted a Condon client since Ben Watson fired his agent. Does that mean NE isn't dealing with Condon, or does Condon steer his clients away from NE? Perhaps a bit of both? With two sides in this presumed impasse, we can only watch and speculate ... and cheer for the Pats.

I think 17 is too high for Watt, I like him but based on the depth of defensive lineman I would rather look at Cameron Heyward or Muhammad Wilkerson at pick 28 and try to scoop up Kerrigan or Aldon Smith at 17.

We certainly can wait and see. If there is a rookie cap before the draft, obviously this is less of an issue. If not, it seems likely that Watt will be downgraded at least a bit, given the baggage of his agent.

JJWatt is a no-brainer. CameronJordan seems overrated.

If Pats don't do defense @ 17, they might just pickup Costonzo (OT).

Kerrigan @ 17? He's been dropping off the charts, and probably there @ 28.

I am guessing that Pats, will trade at least 1 of the top 3picks...

It might be high, it might not but in the end our front seven looks like:

    ROLB - Cunningham
    RDE - Heyward
    RILB - Spikes
    NT- Wilfork
    LILB - Mayo
    LDE - Warren
    LOLB - Kerrigan

Good yound core to build around, plus 4 more picks in rounds 2 & 3.

Thank you Sciz, much appreciated. Also pretty much what I thought, hopefully something can be repaired in the future, b/c I'd hate to see guys crossed off the board that may have been candidates at one point.

I watched a lot of Big 10 ball this yr, and Watt seems to be the kind of player that certainly should be able to compete at the next level. That said, I am not qualified to make a guess at how he could project as a fit in our system.

I do believe that he seems to be a pure 5 tech, as opposed to say, Cameron Heyward, but I could be wrong.

EDIT : Apparently I am wrong, as one of the draft boards has him (Heyward) listed as a 'pure 5 technique DE in a 3-4 defensive alignment.'

Hard to argue with that kind of talent/projected talent. Whatever happens, I think most will agree that the defense should make even greater strides, and continue to improve even more through added picks/talent/depth, the improvement of last yr's rookies, and some returning injured players.

Dropping off the charts? He had on of the best combine workouts of the DL. But, most of the mocks I've read has him going to Jacksonville @ 16.

    I would love to have Kerrigan @ 17 and a OL @ 28.
