Re: The Blame Thread - Offense/Defense/Coaching

Coach is to be blamed.

I hope we don't see another version Cleven Brown BB any time soon.

Surprised to see so many people blaming the defence, we don't have one, we've traded it away over the last 2 years.
I think "lack of a serious running game" should be added to the poll.

We need a kick ass running back, take the pressure off TB.

I watch Colts yesterday, Addai does everything he needs to to ease the pressure on Manning.
Without Addai, TB and Manning would have the same problem.

Wow!! BB and Obrien did not throw those horrendous picks!! Brady did. He is not the same player. He didn't even work through his progressions when he threw that pick in the EZ. Totally unacceptable. Let's hope things turn around next season. This season it's more of the same. I haven't seen any changes from game to game lately.

Belichick is NOT to be blamed, but Brady is looking more and more like end of the line Bernie Kosar.

Why not stop the long bombs which either get picked off,are covered by 2 or 3 defenders or fall short or too long of their target and bring back the shorter passes which move the chains..we don't need to be scoring in seconds..ball control is the key and running the ball more would help as well.

I blame BB fully for that loss

I blame the Coordinators especially on offense.

Why did we run the ball on 1st and 10 more than a few times?

Ridiculous.....

Brady forced a lot of passes but, the game comes down to poor coaching. Coordinators devise the plays and call them..... The plays and schemes on both sides of the ball, especially on the OFFENSE (SUCK). If only the PATS could use the inquisition to get rid of these talentless coordinators. Our coordinators are heretics and they need to go.

I hate them with an INTENSE FIRE induced energy not known or quantified by mankind:mad::mad::mad: This energy has not even been discovered by mankind yet.

-it does not burn things..... it makes them disappear with out a trace due to chemical combustion.

Nobody can really justify putting the blame on Brady.
No, he's not like Manning where Peyton just suddenly turned it on last year after coming back from the injury.
Brady is not the same, no matter how much people want to believe that he has.
Who have we beat and had Tom had good games against?
Nobody, he's still coming back.
We need to get out of the shotgun bull and find new ways to win, whether that be throwing to Watson and Baker, running it more, or whatever.
Defenses, while Tom was gone, figured out how to stop Wes and Randy.
It's gonna take time people, but can we really let the season slip away while we find out?
New ways to win..

The Defense needs time to rebuild with all the youth, and trades that have happened, however the Offense is inexcusable and the coaching is horrific.

ROLF We need a kick ass running back like Addai:)))))))))))

I think it's pretty obvious that it is both the offense and the defense that are responsible for what we have seen the last 4 weeks.

The offensive line cant provide Brady adequate protection to pick and choose the open receiver. Moss has/had great talent, but doesn't fight for possession of the ball. Several of TB's interceptions were due to RM's lack of agression similar to the interception in the end zone this game. It's one thing to miss a pass, its a whole different thing to allow an unchallenged interception.

The defense cannot apply pressure to the QB. An NFL starting QB with enough time can pick apart any defense. A team with Brees or Manning can make that same defense pathetic.

Lastly I think this whole offense has lost itself to the 'big play'. Way too many passes to a covered Moss and not enough to the other side. Why cover number 3 when they dont throw to him? And Brady starting to force stupid throws trying to make plays where none exist.

The one huge bright spot is Welker. But he cannot carry the offense alone.

they should just take Randy Moss (and maybe Welker on those 3rd and 4s that you know are going his way) off the field so they can recover their brains and their creativity.

I posted something in the Moss thread and while I was thinking about that situation Dan Klecko's TD came to my mind. Vrabel's TD, AV's TD... Brady spread the ball around and some pretty awesome schemes allowed him to really mix it up. If they don't come up with something, someday Wes is going to be crawling off that field. And forget Moss for awhile and find a plan B, (of course it's not MY money so :) ) but still. I'm with you, our offensive coaches, BB, and Brady need to start getting more creative out there.

Otherwise, defensively we need to scheme or do whatever we have to do in order to find a pass rush somewhere. Utilize AD differently or something, I don't know but I think the team's at a critical point where more of the same just isn't going to work.

This is'nt really like me, but desperate times call for desperate measures.
Firstly, I'd like everyone within the sound of my voice to examine these stats carefully.
Go ahead, take your time.

3rd Quarter
Start Time Time Poss Drive Began # ofPlays YardsGained Result
12:43 0:41 NE 29 1 71 TD
9:55 1:09 NE 17 3 4 Punt
3:12 3:12 NE 19 5 27 Punt

4th Quarter
StartTime Time Poss DriveBegan # of Plays YardsGained Result
12:53 3:14 NE 39 6 56 Int
9:12 1:37 NE 36 3 4 Punt
4:44 1:00 NE 39 3 0 Punt
0:57 0:22 NE 22 3 11 Int

While there is certainly plenty of credit to go around, I think we'd all agree that this crap falls under the categorie of "Not Getting It Done".
If that kid did'nt make that crazy catch, it would look even worse.
Did I mention that our running game SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS?
Look at the # of plays. WTF?!?
I don't know of many defenses that are going to hold up, while being on the field that much.
Pass protection has... you guessed it, SUCKED.
I can only hope that when Taylor returns, they can platoon him with Morris and maybe get this thing together.
An Offense that goes in the ****ter in the 2nd half of games, especially on the road, is not going to get us far in the post-season.
Go ahead, I can take it.

Defense wins games, not Offense.

The Superbowl-wins, the Patriots were known as a "defense team".

Anyone remember the AFC championship game, in Indy? 4th-goal at the 1-yd line, McGinest tackled EdJames behind the line of scrimmage, and the Patriots won..

Can you say that yesterday, in Miami? 4-1, Miami runs thru the Patriots..

You need to re-build the Patriots defense to be top-notch.

Fix the defensive line: true pass-rushers.
Fix the cornerback problem: Get ONE shutdown-corner.

I hate the "Bend but dont break" defense. Ridiculous.

Also, the 2nd/3rd tier corners will not do! Remember TyLaw? The Jets got a gem, for moving up the draft and gotten Revis.

Defense! Defense! Defense!

That was week 12 in 2003 chief.

Sorry, my bad. Was not the AFC championship game. But it was indy:

McGinest earned the NFL's Levitra Play of the Week honors by providing one of the most memorable plays of the Patriots' 2003 season when he stuffed Indianapolis' Edgerrin James on the goal line with 11 seconds remaining to preserve New England's 38-34 win over the Colts (11/30).

and we gave up 30+ points. It was a big time play by Willie Mac but the defense as a whole didn't play well that game

Pats were up 31-10 early in the 3rd qtr and D was playing well. As usual, Indy ripped off 21 straight points...No matter..

Pats issues this year are Coaching, Defense, and Offense.

Coaching
-Being predictable.
-Not making second half corrections that anticipate the other teams corrections.

Defense
-pass rush. It can be covered up by more scheming and creating mismatches on the line. In the past with great pass rushers, we could play straight up with other teams.
-No emotional leader. (Rodney) Merriweather is on his way with the big hits but he needs to be more vocal, emotional, and consistent.
-Youth. No one to tell them to forget a bad play/mistake. Allows to carry on to the next play.

Offense
-Brady trying to make plays that is not there. (Bledsoe)
-Brady not being the emotional young Brady from years ago.
-Offensive line not giving him enough time.

If pats are going to the playoffs this, pats need to start playing like every game is the last. Each person needs to do his job, but with emotion. If the DB is going to have pass interference, do it with emotion. Make the opposing receiver remember it. That is what I liked about Rodney. Remember when Tom would go running down the field and tackle the WR after a touchdown pass.

My feeling is that defensively they're going to need to better address their pass rush heading into this offseason. They've been one of the bottom teams over the past few seasons in sacks, and unfortunately as much as people here have discussed how poor the secondary is playing, it's quite unfair to ask a bunch of young guys to cover receivers for six or seven seconds.

When you give a quarterback all that time to survey the field, with receivers running back and forth, eventually someone is going to get open. Coverages are in place to deal with specific routes and situations, but all that goes out the window when receivers have time to get away from their man and make a play.

Henne had a lot of time today with a solid pocket around him, especially as the game wore on and you could tell the players were getting tired chasing their receivers around in the 80-degree heat. They need to do a better job of disrupting that - because unfortunately that is a big area of concern.

Look around the league at the stats. There are guys in this league who have almost as many sacks in total as this entire team does. But that aside sacks aren't even the biggest concern - any pressure would be good to see at this point. Watch the game again and you'll see the pocket he had today...it was just ridiculous.

At the risk of coming across all sycophantic, Ian is right; there is no way that DBs can cover guys for more than 3-5 seconds. Even Champ Bailey would struggle with the time that we give opposing QBs.

The pass rush is by far and away my biggest concern too. If you guys get a chance, have a look at just how little push guys like Ty Warren and Wilfork get. The OLBs/DEs aren't much better either. Tully Banta-Cain is apparently our best rusher. Think about that for a minute. Of course, Ty and Vince are great run stuffers but they just don't cut it on passing downs.

The offensive play-calling is also an issue. Does anyone seriously think that Defensive co-ordinators haven't worked out what we are going to do in shotgun with either an empty backfield or one back? The odd draw doesn't seem to slow any pass rush down and why should it? I think giving up the odd 7-10 yard run is a great bargain, when your line can tee off and not worry about run contain on 70% or so of downs. I'd love to see Brady spend a lot more time under centre, drop back and throw. I think it would also help Maroney. When he comes in as the single back, Ds must know to expect run.

I agree with others that it would be nice if Brady checked down more at times and stopped trying to force the ball over the top so much. It worked when Moss and Welker were a new combination, but teams are increasingly learning how to deal with them.

Having said all that, I really don't think the sky is falling in. I think we are two demon pass rushers and some fine tuning on offence away from really scaring teams again. On another note, every single game of this season really matters and I find seasons like this a lot more engaging than those like 2007 when games were over at half-time.
