the operative word is "takes the role of the villain". It is his choice to act the way he does. You don't have to be a kiss ass or a fake, but lets admit that he sometimes acts like a jerk to people. In that sense he brings it on himself.
Some people deserve to be treated like jerks.... Mangini comes to mind.
In other circumstances, I think Belichick doesn't intend to be a jerk at all, but the media portrays it that way anyway. Take walking off the field with :01 left. If Belichick had stuck around and forced Coughlin to run another play, the media would have slammed him for being a sore loser. It's a no win situation when the media doesn't like you.
