I see that Pat Kirwan has us taking him in the 2nd. Haven't heard much about him but looks like an absolute stud. 10 sacks and 25 TFL in 23 games, 4.58 40, 6' 2" 245, but looks much bigger and has a huge wingspan. Anyone know the downside with this kid?

He's a little short and limited athletically, but he's a fine second-tier OLB prospect. 2nd seems a bit early, but not having a third, he could be an option at 53, depending on what the earlier options are.

Not big enough. He gets pushed around by bigger players too often. Apparently has a ton of problems shedding blockers to get to QB

2nd rounders aren't supposed to have much downside, so I don't know what you're asking. Anyway, too short and small to play OLB? That's a good downside. Plus the always present "how well will he learn to play OLB in NE's system".

FWIW, he actually has a pretty short wingspan and very small hands, and that 4.58 was from a friendly pro day -- he ran 4.78 at the Combine.

More generally, the knock on Gibson is lack of instincts and recognition skills for a a read-and-react scheme.

Seems like your run of the mill, special teamer / backup <-- see Pierre Woods

Could have some value as a rush specialist but it not like he dominated against Toledo or New Mexico State.

Seems like a good player. I'm sure he could produce in the NFL.

Vernon Gholston isn't doing him any favors either.

So why are the Jets still hanging onto Gholston?

Good question. They need to release him so that we can bring him in and solve our pass-rushing woes. ;)

I'd be shocked if he's on the NYJ roster on opening day.

BTW, I need your scouting report on Al Woods and his ability to perhaps play DE for Belichick.

Same reason we hang on to Maroney. The production doesn't warrant the pick placement at all and egos of the high paid scouts and F.O. that approved the pick are hoping for second and third year miracles rather than cut losses. Why is Russell still in the NFL at all? Al's ego.
We finally let Chad Jackson go so there is a lesson to be learned. It can be done.

If you're going to attempt to turn another completely unrelated thread into a Maroney-bashing session, at least you could do it a bit more artfully.

In fairness, although Maroney's contributions have been far from first-round worthy, he's already been light years more useful that Gholston or Russell will ever be.

Chad Jackson is a more apt comparison. Fast, physically-gifted, probably a great guy. But he couldn't find a decent route to his own ass without a military-grade GPS. And they hung onto him (way too long) hoping he'd learn how to run routes. Which, of course, is the risk you take drafting a WR for his speed who's never run pro-routes.

Nevertheless, your point is well taken. GMs and owners - especially owners who consistently go for the shiniest objects early in the draft (probably often trumping any concerns of their scouts) - are loathe to admit they effed-up. Sometimes coaches, although I'm not sure that the "ego" thing applies to BB all that much.

Draftcountdown.com says that Gibson lacks good instincts and awareness, he has trouble shedding blockers, isnt stout at the POA, hes undersized, and that his athleticism doesnt translate to the field. They also said hes a poor mans Vernon Gholston! No way in hell we draft this kid.

No idea what you guys are talking about. Jackson was with the team for 2 seasons and 3 training camps. For a high 2nd round pick, that's a fairly quick cut. You'd struggle to find too many top 40 picks cut sooner than that.

Don't know why anyone here bothers with players with small hands and short arms.

Belichick hates players with small hands ... small hands = lousy tackling in the NFL.
