Seven Weeks Til The Draft - 3 Spots to Fill

Whats the deal with the worrying about the corner position? Hobbs is probably going to be Nickel corner. We're likely to play Merriweather on one side and are working towards Law on the other.

Our primary concerns should be LB and RT.

People worry about because there is only Hobbs and a bunch of jags at the position right now.

IMO Hobbs is a good start. I would like Law but not sure the Pats have showed intrest in him yet so your saying likely is a stretch. And expecting Merriweather to be a better CB than Hobbs is prolly a stretch too.

I think you start with Hobbs and Draft a rook somewhere between rounds 2 and 4 (Pats have got good corners there). Any vet you bring in like Ty would be gravy.

In your opinion, Meriweathers ready to switch positions and start?

You think that Belichick has lost his mind and will pull his best cornerback out of the starting lineup so that a backup safety with bad hands can step in for him?

wait, did I miss something. Did seau retire?

I believe the 3 spots could also be CB, ILB & OLB, it depends on where they want AD. Even with AD penciled in at ILB and Bruschi, I still think we need one more starting caliber ILB.

If we sign Seward, we may not even draft an ILB (or at least not early).

I want AD inside/rotating, we don't know where BB will put him yet. And I guess it depends on who they can get.
With AD, one position dictates the other (ILB,OLB). We'll have to allow the season to unfold to really know which position he plays most. And as you say, it depends on the adjustment of new personnel.

IE, if Gholston is there at #7, then maybe AD plays more ILB next season. Or if we can get Groves for instance, then Groves could be the passing down OLB pass rush specialist.
Not only are they ranked differently, but Gholston and Groves bring different strengths to the table. Gholston is more of a bull rusher who needs to work on his pass rush technique. Groves is the speed rusher. Both players have upside and both will need to develop. It's difficult to predict which one would make the biggest impact as a rookie, as each would most likely be eased in slowly. I'd give the edge to the quick first step of Groves as an edge rusher...but much more is needed to play the position than just rushing the QB. I'd also add Avril to the mix.

I'd also add Avril to the mix.
If the Patriots are able to trade down from the number seven slot in the 2008 NFL Draft and pick up another second draft pick, Avril would be great value in the middle of the second round for the New England Patriots.

OLB Adalius Thomas
DE Richard Seymour
NT Vince Wilfork
DE Ty Warren
OLB Jason Taylor (3rd and 5th)
ILB Teddy Bruschi
ILB ????

CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (#7 pick)
FS Brandon Meriweather
SS Rodney Harrison
CB Ellis Hobbs
CB ????

I can't can't start a thread because I just signed up, but I just read on PFT that the lawsuit against the Pats by the Rams fans has been withdrawn. They have a link up and everything. It says cause they heard Walsh was going to take the 5th if called to testify. Maybe someone else could post a new thread.

Not at the cornerback position!

I would currently call the New England Patriots cornerbacks:

Ellis Hobbs and the stiffs.

Or simply, the stiffs. It looks like the Pats are gearing up to get young blood in a deep corner draft. I think that's the right way to go. Draft 2 young corners, then sign a veteran CB to hold the fort. Hopefully by midseason, at least one of the young corners has taken over a spot.

Forget about another free agent cornerback and select three cornerbacks in the 2008 NFL Draft. Let Jason Webster and Lewis Sanders battle for the "veteran cornerback position". If the Patriots are able to trade down from the number seven draft position, I'm sure the Patriots will be able to pick up another 2008 second round draft pick or 2008 third round draft pick (with an additional 2009 draft pick).

As you and I AGREE, we have critical needs at two positions: Corner and Inside Linebacker. This is NOT a long list 10 days into the off-season.

Please look at the inside linebacker position.

The inside linebacker position may be in its worst shape since Belichick arrived in New England.

SAFETY!!!! Tank might have just one good leg and Sanders absolutely rots!
Can't go into 08 with just Rodney and Merriweather.

everybody relax. hobbs is not a stiff, and we'll draft a couple guys who can work with the vets, and capers. l.b., no problem. by july, everyone will be chirping "this is the best l.b. group b.b. has had since he's been here"
do we have holes? sure. but some of you make it sound like we have a bunch of "stiffs" on the team. chill:D
