On ESPN2 in just a couple of minutes, they are going to discuss why the Patriots D is better than you think... should be interesting. Will report back what is said (if you care that is).

OK here's what they said:

The only worthy thing worth reporting here is that Michael Smith pointed out that through the first 8 games of the season the Pats averaged somewhere around 1.8 sacks per game. Through the second half of the season though the Pats have averaged 3.3 sacks per game.

The other guys just harped on the yards allowed which, as we know, is garbage seeing as how yards allowed doesn't mean squat unless the opposition scores. I didn't realize that the Pats had doubled their sack numbers per game through the season. I think this is significant and shows an improvement with the pass rush which should be huge this weekend.

Please provide details. I am seriously curious and psyched.

To expand on that number a little...
It has been 9 weeks since the Pats were held to fewer than 2 sacks. The Ravens have been held to 0 or 1 in 4 of their last 9.

The Pats have 16 sacks in their last 4 games. The Ravens have 3.

Who had most of the sacks? Ninko?

Ninkovich 3.5
Anderson 3
Wilfork 2.5
Ellis 2
Deaderick 1
Love 1
Spikes 1
Mayo 1
Warren 1

(over the last 4 games)

Ninkovich has been playing pretty damn well.

I've been brushing off the Vrabel comparisons, but his career has progressed (statistically) in an uncannily similar way to Vrabel. Like almost identical.

That's a terrible show title.

A little off topic, but I think that the move to safety might be exactly what McCourty has needed. Although he was great last year, he's been mighty terrible this year at CB. Belichick stuck with him there for a while then moved him to safety in the second Buffalo game (I believe). To me, he looked much more comfortable back there against Denver. I also liked the way Moore looked at CB, particularly when he was in man coverage.

People twist them to suit their purpose.

The premise of the show is dumb as we all know that stats are misleading.

If they talked about yards allowed in any serious way as a measuring stick of a good defense, then the show isn't worth my time.

Even casual observers of football can see that the Pats defense has been improving. The sack numbers are interesting though.
