Big deal. The team was, what, 2nd in the NFL in rushing last year despite Maroney being hurt for the majority of the year? Running backs are a dime a dozen, spending a 1st rounder on Maroney was one of the biggest mistakes Belichick's made.
The Saints would laugh this deal off the table though. After Colston, the Saints' WR corps is almost completely bare, especially with Patten and Henderson gone. Colston, Meachem, Lance Moore, and Courtney Roby (who's a return specialist) are the only Saints WRs under contract. WR is actually a bigger need for the Saints than RB; I'd guess they're expecting Meachem to step up as a starter this year unless they make a play for one of the names still out there like Houshmandzadeh, Coles, or Washington.
At RB, they have Bush and Pierre Thomas, who rushed for 625 yards and 8 TDs last year (4.8 yards/carry) when McAllister was hurt, and I suspect they'll go into the season with a rotation of those two and see no problem in it.
They should just draft Crabtree with that 3rd overall pick they got from KC.
Doh!
In no particular order...
-Devery Henderson 5'11 200lbs - Still only 26 years old, deep threat speed with experience playing split end in a pass happy offense with the Saints.
- D.J Hackett 6'2 210lbs - 27 years old with a ton of talent. Injury concerns could be an issue, but if he can prove healthy, he might make for a nice pick up with tremendous upside.
- Armani Toomer 6'3 203 - No spring chicken @ 35, but still produced at a fairly high level for NY over the last two seasons. Reliable target, good hands, and could still have enough gas in the tank to put up quality WR3 #'s. may be able to sign him at the vet minimum.
- Ronald Curry 6'2 210lbs - Still relatively young @ 29, but like Hackett, injury history needs to be considered. None the less, Curry is talented and posted back to back 700yrd seasons in '06 & '07 for some woeful Raider teams.
- Mike Furrey 6'0 195lbs - 1000yrd campaign for the Kittens in '06. Versatile enough to step in a play emergency DB if called on, and like WWW, the guy has sure hands and can be a reception machine.
If that's what they would have done, then I'm doubly glad that we didn't grab the #3. Crabtree's a short RB without top-end quickness, with good-but-not-great hands, who doesn't run great routes, and someone's going to pay him Tom Brady money?
I have been doing some Mocks on the draft after the recent FA signings and I see in one scenaio Macklin available at #23. Thoughts?

By the way, with so much money tied up in Burleson and now Houshmandzadeh, it's possible that the Seahawks will cut Branch. Would anyone want him back here as the #3 receiver if that happens? Did he burn too many bridges?
From what little I've seen and heard, doesn't run disciplined routes. Don't think I would go WR at 23 in any case.
As far as I know, here are the remaining available free agent receivers:
Drew Bennett
Marty Booker
Keary Colbert
Laveranues Coles
Terrance Copper
Ronald Curry
Bobby Engram
Ronald Ferguson
Mike Furrey
Joey Galloway
Rob Gardner
D.J. Hackett
Dante Hall
Marvin Harrison
Devery Henderson
Ike Hilliard
Darrell Jackson
Bryant Johnson
Ashley Lelie
Brandon Lloyd
Dane Looker
Justin McCareins
Shaun McDonald
David Patten
Jerry Porter
Koren Robinson
Amani Toomer
Kelley Washington
Mike Williams
Reggie Williams
From that list, my first vote would be to go after Mike Furrey.
