Possible WR3's to replace Gaff for reasonable $$

Trade with N.O. for WR Robert Meachem. 6' 2" 215, 4.42 in the 40, scored a great 37.5" vertical and a 6.97 in the three-cone agility drill. Was supposedly great hands at Tenn. but has had an issue. Improving. Supposedly a very good downfield blocker. Swap even up for Maroney anybody?
N.O. needs a RB, NE needs a WR. They have both had injuries that are on the mend. Both first rounders.
One unproven great potential player who has been dinged for another.

That's an interesting idea, but who would you trade for Meachem? Maroney? That would leave us with Sammy Morris (32 years old, FA after 2010), Fred Taylor (33, 2 year contract probably his last), Kevin Faulk (soon to be 33, FA after 2009) and BenJarvus Green-Ellis (will be 24, FA after 2009). I can't see any of the others being trade bait, but Maroney, Morris and Taylor are our only RBs under contract past 2009 and Maroney and Law Firm are the only ones under 30.

Big deal. The team was, what, 2nd in the NFL in rushing last year despite Maroney being hurt for the majority of the year? Running backs are a dime a dozen, spending a 1st rounder on Maroney was one of the biggest mistakes Belichick's made.

The Saints would laugh this deal off the table though. After Colston, the Saints' WR corps is almost completely bare, especially with Patten and Henderson gone. Colston, Meachem, Lance Moore, and Courtney Roby (who's a return specialist) are the only Saints WRs under contract. WR is actually a bigger need for the Saints than RB; I'd guess they're expecting Meachem to step up as a starter this year unless they make a play for one of the names still out there like Houshmandzadeh, Coles, or Washington.

At RB, they have Bush and Pierre Thomas, who rushed for 625 yards and 8 TDs last year (4.8 yards/carry) when McAllister was hurt, and I suspect they'll go into the season with a rotation of those two and see no problem in it.

I would be surprised if we brought in Henderson. Donald Hayes had better hands.
Ran better routes too. Or at least not as bad.

I like Furrey out of the original list.

Curry would be okay, too, as long as he isn't Doub Gabriel II. We KNOW he isn't Randy Moss II.

I like Furrey..I remember in 06 when they played Det...and..I liked him then...I would think he might be a good replacement...Toomer..maybe too old to play full time..not sure he'd fit Hacket..Currey MAYBE possibility..but only cheap money....Draft...but ONLY 2nd day...no wasting early picks...

Maybe Drew Bennett should be added to the list, good height and speed.

In a particular order :D

When judging FA WR you must take into effect how good a QB they were working with and type of offense they run. So with this in mind here are my top 5.

1. Ronald Curry, working with the QB's he as worked with the last few years and he still had production. He is 30 y/o and I would love to see him in a good offense.

2. Nate Washington, I think with his skills, age and production should be my #1 but the money may be too steep.

3. Devery Henderson, much like Washington he would stretch the field opposite Moss we just need to bring back stickum in order for him to hold on to the ball.

4. Reggie Williams, When Garrard was playing well he had 10 TD's. He is athleatic and can block with that big frame. Maybe he could learn from Moss, even how to separate from defenders.

5. Mike Furry, this guy is healthy now after concussion issues in 08. He has been productive with Kitna so with Brady I bet he does alright. He was a safety when he came into the league and he could play specials as well.

I would say that BB is going to take at least one WR in the draft this year and maybe two with Moss contract up in 2010. Should be interesting but I agree that WR3 would be best filled by a veteran not a rookie.

I still like the idea of giving up one of our draft picks to the Rams (rebuilding) for Tory Holt and hopes BB is on the same page.

Plenty of names to choose from, the 3rd WR is likely to only get 50-60 looks all year. Really more of a decoy.

I think they draft someone in rounds 1-3 and sign a veteran minimum free agent. Some names, all have their warts but as a number 3 option for vet minimum they could work out, if they don't give the job to a draft pick.

Out of that list-
Engram
Furrey
Washington
All pretty good players.

Bobby Engram is my #1 choice plus draft one. BTW, is Bam Childress available?

Poor Marvin. There has been no reported interest in him from any team.

I sorta wonder if he ends up back on the Colts. But, I kinda was hoping to move on.

You guys will think I'm nuts but BB LOVES Ocho Cinco.....and I can see a draft day trade for our yearly malcontent project bringing us this gift. I know we are all talking about defense now, but his route-running is about the best in the league. Watch for Crabtree to fall to them and then they make the trade they wished they did last year. BTW--anyone notice how quiet he has been lately?? Something's up.

Marty Booker would be a nice addition, I see a draft pick as well..

I'd swap Maroney for Chad Johnson, but that's about it. I think the Bengals can get better offers though. I really don't think Cinci will get rid of Chad or they'll have no weapons outside of Chris Henry.

My favorite receiver from that list is Mike Furey, but he would not be the best for the Pats. The role that he excels at is too much like Wes Welker. The Pats need a Devrey Henderson type of guy, a speedster opposite of Moss.

As much as I think it would be a bad business move, I too, am very intrigued with Chad Johnson. The guys is a punk, but he sure is talented and it would be awesome to have him split out wide opposite of Moss and have Welker in the slot.

Thats why I said if they can get ahold of Crabtree that would open the door to trading for Chad...

Thought the same thing, would be dissapointed if they signed him, more of a Wes Welker Clone, need someone to go deep and Henderson or Booker would fit that role..

Chad Johnson... I seem to recall the Pats always saying that they build teams, not acculumate talented individuals :)

Furrey is intriguing. So's Torry Holt. The others, not as interested personally.

No kidding. He hung 12 catches on us. Don't remember the last time anyone else has done it. He was unstoppable. Made me think of the last time we played Welker in Miami. Playing for Detroit doesn't get you into too many Pro-Bowls, this kid has some real talent in the slot.
