Per Mike Reiss:

Patriots executive director of media relations Stacey James said the team will officially learn the date of its first playoff game on Jan. 1. That is because the television networks have a significant say in the decision and want to see the matchups before making the call.

I believe that the networks typically like to make the higher interest match-up the late or night game (quasi-primetime). Do you think the Pats will be playing in the Saturday or Sunday late game regardless of the match-up?

I'm just hoping that they get the Sunday game as I may have to work on Saturday. I'll do everything in my power to get out of it but it would just be a lot easier for me if the game is scheduled for Sunday.

Let's see. Which would you choose for Sunday
PATS vs. JAX or
PITT or KC vs. CINCI

I think JAX will play on Saturday.

From Reiss' mailbag:

When will we find out which day the Pats will play on during wild card weekend? Do you think the NFL will give us the Saturday night game again to keep the Pats in prime time?
Steve Pye, Marlborough

A: The Patriots might get a hint later this week -- because of some of the planning that goes into hosting a game – although official word likely won’t come until after the season finale on Jan. 1.

So did we get any hint yet?
