PFT: Pats sign CB Fernando Bryant

Re: Bryant Joins The Pats

Bryant was really good when he was with the Jaguars. I remember he was a big signing when the Lions got him a few years ago.

I know everyone wants a "shutdown" cb, but these guys are all starter-quality/experience guys who can play in a zone. If anything they are at least an upgrade over Gay.

But yeh, as someone said earlier, there does seem to be a "machine-gun" type of mentality with the corner spot, but historically this is what theyve done when they needed to improve/replace a position on the team. Last year they signed four or five wrs, in 2001 they signed a ton of linebackers and in 2000 they drafted tight ends. Overkill is a big part of the BB personnel philosophy.

Re: Bryant Joins The Pats

Nice pick up....We are getting a career starter who has worked under Capers and had his best days under him.

With the way this team has filled in anything and everything in the CB position I would think a career starter would get everyone pumped up. How would you compare Bryant to guys like Gay, Poteat, Otis, Poole ect.....

To compare him to Asante may not be fair.

IMO we replace Asante with a healthy Hobbs (improved from another year experience).

Bryant would than have to be able to replace Last years injured Hobbs.

Keeping in mind that anyone we draft will be able to compete for the spots in case neither can live up to it.

Re: Bryant Joins The Pats

basically what you said is the pats couldnt afford samuel,i dont get your point, if they deem hes not worth the money, they cant afford him

They could afford to sign him, they just deemed his value wasn't worth his asking price. They could have easily given him the deal he got from the Eagles, but they chose not to.

I guess we are in semantics here, but I feel there is a difference between not being able to afford a player and deeming that paying the player is not in the best interests of building a team.

Re: Bryant Joins The Pats

Another JAG for training camp fodder.

Re: Bryant Joins The Pats

Can we get someone that isn't 30 and on the downside of their career? Webster played one game for the Bills last season. Sanders played for Atlanta (a bottom 5 pass D team) last season, and Bryant played for the WORST pass D in the league last season. Sheesh.

It's all about the system. The Lions have no pass rush, and no run defense. That tends to put corners in a bad spot. A lot of fans are going to be surprised at how good Bryant is this year when all he has to do is his job, and the rest of the defense is going to make it easier for him to do.

Re: Bryant Joins The Pats

That scouting report makes it seem like he chose a team where his skills could be best utilized.

What does this do to the Ty Law negotiations? If anything, put more pressure on Law to be reasonable in expectations from the Pats.

I don't think it affects the Ty Law negotiations other than to weaken Law's position. But Bryant, Webster, and Lewis are all JAGs who could see a good year with a good pass rush from the Pats.

Is there a Capers connection? When was this? Are you mistaking Jags for Panthers?

Anyway, I like the signing. Lions fans seem to be a bit perplexed that they cut him. He wasn't terrible and they feel all Millen did was create another need with the vacancy.

His biggest knock by Lion fans is that he is always hurt. But healthy he is different.

IMO, I think BB knows full well (esp. with the SB fresh in his mind) that a good pash rush can make an average secondary look great. Based on this see-what-sticks approach to DB, I expect NE to invest their #7 in a pass rushing specialist.

Capers served as an assistant for the Jaguars during the 1999 and 2000 seasons, the one where they went 14-2 but kept losing to the Titans.

Not being able to afford something is different than deeming something not worth the money.

For Example:
I can afford to pay $2000 a month on a mortgage. However, The 1100 sq. ft condo is not worth the money when I can get a 3700 sq. ft house with a 1/2 acre of land.

I can afford the Condo, but its not worth the money when compared to the house. And that is what the Pats decided. That Samuel wasn't worth the money. And he's not. And the Eagles will learn that quickly enough.

I am curious what they are going to do with Lito Shepard or Sheldon Brown. Both are very good corners and the Eagles can't play all 3 at the same time.

That's what I was thinking. I'd like to think they're still going after Law.

I doubt it. Only so many JAGs you can pack on the roster.

Don't have a link because I heard it on a radio interview with Andy Reid but they asked him about the possibility of Sheldon Brown moving to SS and Reid commented that "Sheldon can play any position in the secondary, he's an extremely talented kid" etc. etc. so there's a chance their secondary could be Samuel/Brown/Dawkins/Shepard next year.

I think that people are going to be somewhat shocked when the Pats still look at a CB higher in the draft. Especially when you consider that Sanders, Webster, and Bryant are all here on 1 year deals. I believe that they are creating a buffer so that the CB the Pats choose isn't thrown into the fire the way that Samuel and Wilson were in 2003.

The Pats have shown they don't like doing that to their players. There has been only one exception and that is Mankins. I believe he was drafted to start immediately. I don't believe any of the other 1st round picks were drafted to start immediately.

Seymour? My memory isn't all that good, ex pot smoker but I believe he started right away or was at least in alot of sub packages.

I am hoping that with Capers on board these guys are not going to have cover for very long. I think we are going to see some very creative blitzes on the defense that are not going to give opposing Quarterbacks time to throw. The signings to our secondary so far have been great and I think shore up the secondary for us. These guys are not going to have to cover for a long time. I would like to see them add a rookie in mid rounds. Bryant was really good with a winning Jacksonville team then stunk in Detriot, winning cures alot. Tank Williams was awesome with Tennessee, he has suffered from injuries but if he is ready to go for us, man he delivers a hit. I feel very optimistic about next year's defense, to the point that I think we will be talking about it the way we talked about the offense this year. I think we will be lights out.

Wilfork? Graham? Seymour?

Of course, the talent on the team now is much greater than it was when Seymour and Graham were drafted.

It wouldn't surprise me if they took a CB in the first two rounds (though not at #7). But I think they signed these guys, and Bryant especially, so they wouldn't have to if the relative value's not there.

That would be a rocking secondary if it happened. Though I question Sheldon Brown's ability to be a SS.

Whoa slow down Killer that is optimism, if we had that other first round pick that was stripped from us I'd feel alot better about the defense but I will be shocked if 80 percent of the draft isn't used on defense.
These people who want to see a tackle taken first will not happen unless his last name is Long.
This will be the draft I've been waiting years for defense, defense and more DEFENSE!

I think if we move to more man or press coverage with Capers in the secondary, Hobbs is actually better suited for that type of coverage than Samuel. Samuel may be the better CB by a good amount, but Samuel is not strong in man or press coverage. Hobbs actually is better at man and press coverage than he is in a soft zone.
