Patriots receive fourth round compensatory pick

With 100 declared juniors, the Patriots should get a decent player with
this pick unless they gamble with Tavon Wilson's brother.

It will be interesting to see if AdamJT13 weighs in on the comp picks for this year.

It will also be interesting to see the NFL's list of the Players who did and didn't count from last year..

Hilarious that we Pats fans are HAPPY when we get a pick we can't trade!

The joke's on us when he picks a 6th round projection anyway, though. LOL

So in answer to the question regarding Sopoaga, he counted as a loss for the 49ers since he left San Francisco as a free agent - and it was the Patriots (his final team) rather than Philadelphia (where he originally signed) that got dinged for the addition.

The SF part of the equation makes sense; there was some debate whether the Patriots or Eagles should count as the team that gained in the compensatory pick formula.

There was also some debate over whether Svitek would qualify.

Can someone explain the rationale for the compensatory draft pick system? Seems to me it's rewarding teams for failing to retain good free agents. Why is it needed given that everyone has to play under the same cap?

If I recall correctly it was put in place as 'compensation' to teams that had done the right thing - build a good football team - but paid for that success by being having their roster raided by other clubs. Somehow it seemed unfair that a team draft, train and coach a player, and then see him walk away and get nothing in return.

Keep in mind this was instituted back when free agency was brand new. The thought process about losing players in free agency was much different then - the franchise tag was also placed to protect those better teams - and staying under the cap was considered to be more difficult than it is now.

FWIW, the answer to why the Pats got a 4 instead of a 6 appears to be that, as a result of games played, etc., Welker was valued slightly higher than Amendola.

The key, though, is that (according to that Philly.com article, IIRC) when "canceling out players" for the purpose of the formula, contracts always cancel downward first, unless there are no available players; then it cancels upward. This is true even if it's a much longer way down than it is up.

Put slightly differently:

GAINED (top to bottom): Amendola, Sopoaga, Svitek
LOST (top to bottom): Welker, Thomas, Chung, Woodhead

Svitek canceled out Woodhead; b/c Welker's value was higher than Amendola, Amendola canceled out Thomas. Since Sopoaga's deal was slightly higher than Chung's, it canceled out Chung, leaving Welker.

That's about 4 rounds too high for that slug. Seriously,as a Pats fan would you want another sloooooowwwwww LB,when we are just starting to get more agressive and athletic?

It's a joke, Eddie. Goodell wants Sam drafted, Kraft and BB had good things to say and New England would be a good place for him.

So...the conspiracy.

RG: Hey, Bob, draft Sam.

RK: Seems like a good kid, but we really don't have enough picks, and too many needs...

RG: Yeah, about that...

Don't be surprised to see Sam go off the board in the 4th or maybe 5th, by the way. He'll play 4 special teams and play them well. Also, production matters. He's a tweener, sure, but production matters.

hmmmm. Jesters get 4 Comp picks based on that set of FA losses. ??
and compared to Patriots losses (Welker & woodhead both >> any jester losses)

someone must have not only tweaked the formula but added an element of roulette with the Jester logo on every other red number. wonder who that might have been (maybe joker has a guess)? ;)

The funny thing is that Jimmy did not apply his interpretation to his projections.
