BEREA, Ohio -- Romeo Crennel's boss isn't planning to make him the next former Cleveland coach. Not now, and not anytime soon.

Browns general manager Phil Savage strongly backed Crennel on Thursday, saying it was unfair to blame him for all Cleveland's problems, temporarily snuffing speculation the struggling club was on the verge of a coaching change.

"Romeo has the total support of [owner] Randy Lerner and myself," Savage said. "He has the respect of the team. They believe in him. Randy and I are 100 percent behind him. We're going to do everything in our power to help him rest the next five games, the upcoming offseason and next year."

I hope Crennel turns it around in Cleveland (well, not enough that they make it harder for us to compete for a Super Bowl), but these GM statements that they fully support their coach and aren't going to fire them after the season really don't mean anything. You know if things in Cleveland continues to head downhill, there is still a chance that Crennel gets fired. Savage will just spin it at the time he made those statements that he was fully supportive of Crennel, but since then he lost the team.

There are plenty of coaches who got fired that got public support of their GM or owner only months or weeks before he was fired.

Yeah I would say this means nothing. Romeo has a big problem with a bad team and a tough schedule. I doubt he returns to Cleveland next year.

What is wrong with this Browns organization?

Ever since "the drive" and "the fumble", they've continued to go downhill ever since.

For one thing, it's a different Cleveland team. Remember that Art Modell moved the original, storied Cleveland Browns team of Otto Graham and Jim Brown to Baltimore. This new version has had one winning year in seven, soon to be eight. The last head coach for the "old" Browns was none other than Bill somebody or other. ;)
