Call me cynical, but I think the only reason Cherrington was fired was because the Sox are afraid of the PR hit of firing Farrell now that he has been diagnosed with lymphoma. I think the plan was to make Farrell the fall guy originally.
I agree that Farell could have been - and should have been - fired at season's end without the lymphoma.
With the lymphoma, he now can be "re-assigned" - for his health, of course.
Don't know if Cherry would've been kept either way; he also deserved to be fired.
Personal opinion: Cherrington is taking the fall for Larry Luchino, who is leaving anyway. I believe some of the bad personnel decisions discussed in this thread were pushed on Cherrington.
Also, where is the decision to bench Bradley, just as his bat is getting hot, coming from? Field manager of front office?
