Regarding a few UFAs, I wonder whether the Pats are:

A. Waiting to see how the draft plays out before trying to sign one or two more.

B. Have a handshake deal in place but have told the agents that they want to wait until May 16, to avoid affecting the team’s compensation haul for 2019.

Vacarro, Breaux and Casillas specifically come to mind.

wait until signings don't count against comp picks, although now they would likely only cost a 6th each

Both worked out the same day, AFAIK. The Pats chose Ulrick John for the team and offered Tretola a job as a bouncer at Patriot Place.

$1.0M salary (gtd)
+$2.33M proration of $7M signing bonus = $3.33M cap hit

2019:
$2.0M roster bonus (option bonus?)
$5.0M salary
+$2.33M bonus proration = $9.33M cap hit

2020:
$6.0M salary
+$2.33M bonus proration = $8.33M cap hit

Seems fairly reasonable to speculate that Bryant was looking for something like $6M-$8M gtd on a 1-year deal.

Average 2018 cap hit for the 10 new players the Pats have acquired so far this season through trades and free agent signings is $1.93M.

If you take out Clayborn's $5.5M cap hit, that average drops to $1.43M for the other 9 players.

It will be interesting to see what the average 2018 cap hit is for the rookie prospect the Pats draft this weekend.
