Zappe's Opportunity Was There To Seize Starting Role with Patriots, And He Missed It
Ian Logue
While the hope was probably that he'd end up back in New England to try and finish what he started, it's likely a little tough for Bailey Zappe not to be sitting there wondering, "what if?" as he looks back on what he’s accomplished heading into his second season in the NFL.

The Bears changed their coverage and that was that.

Zappe (and the Patriots) could not counter.

Would've been nice if Zappy had been given the starter's reps during practice that week, then the start itself that night; both of which he absolutely deserved based on the results of the previous two games.

Speaking of two games, remember the next two games? Pats won them both IN SPITE OF their QB and NOT because of him... And Corky STILL nearly lost them!

Bill placed Both of his QBs in No-Win situations on the night he Should Have passed Papa Bear, at home, in front of a national TV audience.
Seems like it was Bill himself who missed the opportunity.

With Jones still out, Zappe started the next two weeks against both the Lions and Browns, winning each start in blowout fashion (29-0 and 38-15, respectively) ahead of their match-up against the Bears in Week 7.
The fact that he started and won 2 games as a rookie cannot be overlooked.
Keep in mind that fact that coaches supervise practice and scrutinize film (when it's available) very carefully.
If he wishes to remain employed as an NFL qb. his fundamentals need to improve.

you're still on the zappe hill? really?

Zappe would have had to have a Brady like camp and even then it would not be enough unseat Jones as the starter.

You cant just sit the 15th pick in a draft just like that when it is a QB. Especially this guy who is very fragile emotionally.

Overall it worked out for the best because Zappe has looked awful this season and deserved to be demoted. Jones competition has been eliminated and is no longer a threat or distraction. During and after the next 4 months the Patriots will know without a doubt if they need a QB in the 2024 draft.

To be fair both of Zappe’s wins were not really because of him either. And the Patriots played the Colts after the Bears..I think I could have won that game by doing nothing. Lol

There’s no guarantee the Bears wouldn’t have figured out Zappe anyway had he started that night. The kid has physical limitations, there was tape on him and it was only a matter of time. But yeah Zappe definitely should have started the Bears game. Mac was not ready to play and it showed. Why Bill was pouring gas on the idea there was a QB controversy I have no idea.

By not naming Mac as the starter in the offseason. Personally, I just heard that as Bill seizing another opportunity to be obscure.

OK, I get it. A little more passive than "pouring gas on a QB controversy" perhaps? :)

there WAS no opportunity for him to seize anything this year beyond the backup job, and he couldn't even do that

the kid is plucky......but he'll be selling insurance by 28
Zappe will net at least 3-4 million by the time he exits the NFL which is much more than what an average salesman makes in his lifetime.

His life is set.

I missed that part. When did he do that?
By being vague after the Bears game about who his starter was for the Jets game and after. He never said “Mac is our starting QB” like he did with Cam. Saying “Mac is our starter and we will see this week how he feels” would have nipped this in the bud. Didn’t need to be vague and let the media go crazy guessing what he meant by that.

he's made 1.35 career so far......he's set to make 216,000 right now........that's before agent fees, taxes, etc

if he makes it the NFL average, even the NFL average plus one or two, without a significant change in the arc of his career, he will 1000% be finding a job when he's done

3 million earnings at 27? no way set for life

and the average worker who's making 60k a year over an anticipated 40 year work career makes over $4.5 million over that time.......the average NFL player (with an average career of 3 years) for sure better have a fallback plan........life isn't as grand as we'd like to think when you're the bottom half of an NFL roster or PS player

You are not allowing for the money to appreciate . 3 million by 28 can definitely grow manifold due to compounding over 30- 40 years . and the fact that NFL players can get by as coaches or assistants . Need not make it sound like they will be running for scraps. They are in a decent position provided they don't squander it.

decent position for sure......but most end up working is all (the ones that are in zappe's position, bottom roster/PS/out of the league types)

but he's pulled 1.35 million so far......he's seen what, maybe 800k of that? buy a house and that goes quickly......

Even writers are confirming Zappe was "Patricia's guy".
If he couldn't keep the job, even after the roll-over games of Lions & Browns, then even ultra-biased MP had to admit those vanilla games weren't fair evaluation of Zappe's readiness.
