Some jackass mediot had the temerity to ask if the Brady Quinn negotiation was partly responsible for the hold-up in getting Meriweather signed. I guess that's a legit question, being that people are talking about that on the radio, etc... but it's so CLEARLY a pointless question to ask Belichick. His reply? CLASSIC:

referring to Quinn..."He don't play for our team."

I believe the reporter was the unfortunate John Tomase. It's hard to tell whether BB just hates the Herald or if he hates Tomase as a person but it's clear that there are issues.

The most humorous part of this is that the scribe who asked that question has been covering the team for a while. He's not a rookie. So, why would he not learn what BB responds to in a PC? BB never answers questions about contracts, about players who aren't on the field, about other team's players, and about other team's strategies.

Saying that, there were a couple questions that elicited informative responses from BB. The question regarding veterans new to the team having to learn new terminology, specifics about objectives in the early stages of training camp, and other questions focused on what must be accomplished at this stage. It's fairly easy to construct a set of topics to which BB would respond positively. This ain't rocket science, and every time I hear an idiotic question, I wait in anticipation for BB's not so subtle putdown before he moves on to the next question. Unbelievable!

This is quite a lot for Belichick to say about players who are not at practice. Also, sounds like he doesn't expect these to be lengthy holdouts.

Where can I find a recording or transcript of the TC Press Conferences?

    Thanks in advance!

Well...I suppose it is Training Camp for the Media as well...hopefully there will be a few cuts by the time the regular season commences...

Oh I think Tomase has to bear the fallout from the continual, mean spirited hatchet job that those horrible women from the "track" write about BB and his family's personal life. I would love to see juicy details of Fee & Raposa's personal life published for all to sneer at. Maybe the child Fee had out of wedlock or the pot Gayle's daughter was caught with or the blonde that Laura's husband was caught with would show them how truly cruel it is to bring to the forefront innocent people's private personal matters? File under "as you sow, so shall ye reap".

Tomase isn't a idiot. He wanted a snappy Belichick comeback, and he got one by asking a legitimate (but to Belichick, inappropriate) question about Meriweather. It's a great tidbit to throw in an article. Something like:

Belichick was tight-lipped about the difficulties getting 1st round pick Brandon Meriweather in to camp. When asked whether the unresolved contract negotiations between the Browns and Brady Quinn had any effect on talks, Belichick grew testy.

"He don't play for our team," Belichick said.

Yeah I think that's part of it. BTW -- did you see the item a few days ago where the seemingly ripped BB for giving his wife of 28 years, the house in Weston for a $1. The way it was written was like they were trying to prove BB was a monster. IMHO it showed he was doing the right thing and is probably why there's been no he said she said in the papers about their divorce. Yes, Complainian, I'd call that "classy." :D

Tomase cracks me up. He's great on the Pats' beat. I really enjoy his columns and the like. It just seems his glaring weakness is asking questions during press conferences. His questions border on inane, sometimes anyway, and he stumbles over his words. Poor guy. :singing:

Personally I don't hate Tomase. He can be very funny on the radio and he sometimes tells some interesting ancedotes but clearly BB doesn't feel the same way I do.

Great point. I personally value the work John has been doing on the Pats beat. I don't see the shadowy figures around every corner that some seem to see, at least where it comes to Tomase. I think he does a legitimately honest job, and I think his reporting has enhanced the Herald's coverage, along with the work Breer does with the blog, which is fantastic.

If we think that in the end, the question was legit, then why shouldn't he ask it? It was a respectful question. What kind of reporter would he be if he didn't ask questions because he thought he might not get answers?

I've been a fan for four decades, and I'm telling you, this is far and away the best coverage we have ever had of this team, hands down. Its not even close, with the Herald guys, Reiss, Gaspar, and others like Eric McHugh. They all write with sincere enthusiasm for the game and respect for what this team has accomplished. You can not ask for more.

Anybody who wants to complain about 'the media' now, at least as it concerns the beat coverage of the team, just feeds the kind of kool aid drinking fanboy stereotype that bottom feeders like Dan Shaughnessy love to crow about.

Tomase seemed to get off to a rocky start with a lot of negativity in his early reporting. He's steadily improved his offerings and now provides a more thoughtful, balanced story that is well worth the trouble to track down.

I recall while on the Red Sox beat he had a particularly nasty one concerning the leftfielder, and I wonder if that incident followed him a bit in terms of rep. Believe me, I can be as hypersensitive as the next guy, but I find Tomase to be an extremely strong reporter these days. As a fan I'm very glad to have him working this beat. I don't think there's anything wrong with the guys holding the team up to SINCERE scrutiny from time to time. We should WANT that. As I mentioned before, these guys all share a love of the game and an appreciation for what the Pats have accomplished. What more could we ask for.

I think another part of the problem is that hacks like Borges, and to a lesser but still pervasive degree Nick Cafardo, were so biased against the team for personality reasons that they poisoned the well for guys that may have a sincere difference of opinion with a football decision, or a sincere question as to why a decision was made. It seems sometimes they can't ask anymore without being tarred with the same brush as a corrupt cretin like Borges, or his contemporary Dan Shaughnessy (whose 'get your super bowl tickets' piece this morning was typically manipulative once again).

Tomase does a really good job. I'm surprised it was he who posed the question.
