Its very hard to do I know but just looking long term for a moment.

I honestly don't think we can win the Superbowl this year unless things fall very, very right for us with key injuries to opposing teams and the likes.

I was reading in the draft thread about free agency next year. If you make the last eight in the playoffs you are very restricted in FA. Would it suit us to sacrifice a chance at doing it this year to put ourselves in position to be serial contenders for the next four to five years?
We could bring in some top young guys this offseason and we have a lot of picks in whats expected to be a very deep draft this year, and we also have 2 no.1s in the 2011 draft.

Now, that is an impressive list of WRs. I would kill for Greg Jennings and/or Hines Ward if ever we can lay a hand on them, both physical beasts

Physical beasts is certainly what we need, but first on the front seven, esp OLB.

Re: Looking long term vs this seasons end

I could see us taking Chester Taylor as a 3rdDownBack if the price is right. Depends what kind of market there is for the guy.

Let Neal and Kaczur go. Neal is injured and pretty old. Kaczur will be replaced by Vollmer or Light at RT

WR - Lance Moore possibly. Malcolm Floyd. It's actually a decent year for mid-calibre WR's

Here is a list of potential free agents this offseason.

Assuming an uncapped year, it will take 6 years to become a UFA and 5 to become a RFA. Players whose contracts expire after 3-5 years will be RFAs.

Free Agency: What will it be?

With that in mind, your list becomes less attractive - changes noted in red.

Re: Looking long term vs this seasons end

Thanks for that Mayo.

Re: Looking long term vs this seasons end

Sadly, we are kind of stuck with Kaczur.

Re: Looking long term vs. this seasons end

I would love to see pry Dumbervil from the Broncos, it would solve our pass rushing problem and he is a very effective player in the 3-4. It will cost a sh#it load to get him. You get him, resign Wilfork, sign a corner such as Deshea Townsend who comes from one of the best defenses in the NFL and been a very effective corner on that defense. I also like Dawan Landry from the Ravens who is a very productive yet under the radar player, who is known as a ball hawk. 3rd WR such Lance Moore or Chris Henry wouldn't be bad here either. We need that guy after losing Gafffeny last year. We get a couple pass rushers in the draft such as Hardy and Miller along with the running back such as Evan Royster, will we have improved drastically. I fully expect to go out and do a lot this offseason.

Just think we could of drafted Greg Jennings in 06, but Chad Jackson was picked instead.

This list is old. Players like Eli Manning, Adrian Wilson, James Harrison, Antoine Winfield, Maurice Jones-Drew, Nick Kazcur, Greg Ellis etc. have already gotten contract extensions this previous offseason and are not going to be free agents next offseason unless they get cut by their perspective team.

Not only that, but there's a period of time where the team has exclusive rights to negotiate with their FA's, correct? A lot of these names won't hit the open market.

Re: Looking long term vs. this seasons end

Fair enough but rather than just quote and point it out, why not go and get a newer list?

There's no explicit "free agent re-signing period," but other teams "can't" contact other team's FAs until the start of free agency, while a team can negotiate with its own players at any time.

that takes work and thought..........too much for some around here

Re: Looking long term vs. this seasons end

Just think we could of drafted Greg Jennings in 06, but Chad Jackson was picked instead.

We could have had Brandon Marshall (119) in the 4th round, but took Garrett Mills instead at 106.

We could have had TE Owen Daniels (98) in the 3rd round, but took Dave Thomas instead at 85.

Lots of misses in 2006. DE/OLB Mathias Kiwanuka (32), CB Richard Marshall (52), RB Maurice Jones-Drew(60), RB Jerious Norwood (79), RB Leon Washington (117), DE/OLB Elvis Dumervil (126) and DE/OLB Mark Anderson (159) were also players we could have had.

We could have had (first 4 rounds only):

1(21) Mathias Kiwanuka, DE/OLB. BB claims to love 6'5" 265# guys with speed and athleticism. Kiwi was available, and right in our back yard.
2(52) Maurice Jones-Drew, RB. Wouldn't you love to have "pocket Hercules" in our backfield? Richard Marshall and Greg Jennings would have been nice, too.
3(75) Brandon Marshall, WR
4(85) Owen Daniels, TE
4(106) Elvis Dumervil, DE/OLB
4(118) Stephen Gostkowski. At least we got one right.

Now doesn't that look better?

Or stick with LoMo in the 1st and take CB Richard Marhsall or WR Greg Jennings at 52 and RB Jerious Norwood at 75 or Leon Washington at 106.

Well, for my quote it was a general statement that we shouldn't wish for the Pats to do worse than they would just to give us an inside track on these guys... because this list will likely change before we have a chance to court them anyway.

There's no explicit "free agent re-signing period," but other teams "can't" contact other team's FAs until the start of free agency, while a team can negotiate with its own players at any time.

That's kind of what I was thinking. There's a period of time between the last game of the season and official free agency where some of these guys may get locked up.

Re: Looking long term vs. this seasons end

Too bad Kirk Morrison would be a RFA in an uncapped year, I've always like him, though unsure how he'd fit into NEs scheme(6'2 250ish i think)
