Maybe BB will do something like trade down on pick #60 (300 pts) and pick up, for example, a high 3rd and a 4th.
Draft Smith with one of the extra picks to lower the risk.
Profit.
Yup. Like, others here have said so long as the medical team gives the OK. And also if BB and his team agree he would fit in NE. I am not completely knowledgable of his game and how it would fit but I gather he would be a Collins superfreak. Let Collins go, keep Hightower and add Smith what do you lose? You gain money to pay other players than Collins.
LOL, let Collins go? He is a one of a kind player. Jaylon Smith is coming off a serious injury and would lucky to be 9/10ths as good as Collins even if his health checked out 100%.
We are too quick to push players out the door just because we are afraid we can't afford them. The whole reason we moved Chandler Jones is because BB feels players like Collins, Butler, Hightower are more important to our core and we're creating cap space to resign them.

You do realize the amount of FAs this team will have next year? Not just back end filler but contributers that draft picks this year won't be able to fill in one year. I don't understand where people think they will have all this money. They have High, Collins and Butler on the team this year at their current salaries and the cap is sitting at 5ish. Now, where pray tell is the top end money coming from to sign all 3, plus fill out the rest of the roster? Got a left tackle? How about a right tackle? Losing a Collins/Hightower/Butler is an extremely likely possibility. It's not thst we are afraid we can't afford them, it's more like we CAN'T afford them. Denver has to pay one so they lost 2 major parts of their D to big paydays. This team will be no different. Some teams will a)pay through the nose because they are dumb and b) try to screw the Pats. Doesn't mean they can't recover, just means all three being here will most likely not happen.
Over The Cap's estimate of a $166 million cap gives the Pats $72 million in 2017 cap room with 30 players under contract. That also doesn't account for the ~15 rookies they'll draft between now and the 2017 season. To completely over simplify things, that's enough to sign Collins, Hightower, and Butler each for $9 million cap hits in 2017, 10 guys on rookie or cheap veteran contracts averaging a million each, 10 mid-tier veterans averaging $3 million each, plus $5 million left over. You do realize the amount of FAs this team will have next year? Luke Kuechly was the best college linebacker to ever play the game and there was very little probability he did not become a superstar. He's a future Hall of Famer and no one who watched him in college, when he would know where the play was going before the player getting the ball did, would have doubted that if you told him.
Smith is more of a Derrick Johnson, a guy who (assuming no lasting effects from injury) could be a Pro Bowl guy for a decade. I'd take that in the top 10 picks, though, let alone the 2nd or 3rd.
I also worry about keeping Collins and Hightower though I'm more sanguine about it than previous posters. Still, this would be some nice insurance. With a need a year off, and the Patriots luxury of lots of picks with relatively few holes to fill on the roster, I could easily see Smith as a 2nd rounder. It would be, as Patriots picks have gone in various degrees of success, much less of a shock than Tavon Wilson or Sebastian Vollmer in the 2nd, or Duron Harmon, Stevan Ridley, Jake Bequette, Ellis Hobbs, or Jordan Richards in the 3rd
I think we can count on BB trading one of those 2nd rounders regardless since they're back to back picks, and hopefully it's a small trade down.

Also note that Solder is still under contract through 2017 and presumably still the plan at left tackle then, but you could get another $7 million in cap room by cutting him a year from now. Amendola is the only other guy that sticks out, with $6.5 million in savings if he's cut next year.
Also quite possible to trade into next year, seeing as how we only have 5 total picks in 2017 and 11 this year. That's actually what I'm expecting.
I know our 4th was stolen in 2017, what other pick are the Pats missing?

I may be changing my tune a little bit after reading this. Looks like Jaylon Smith has a drop foot problem due to nerve damage. Don't know too much about it, and I'm not a doctor. I did read up on it a little bit, and it doesn't look good. Feel really bad for the kid.
