We have just had a tremendous example of exactly NOT what to do if you are constructing a football winner. Some Patriots fans who espouse the use of these techniques, should learn from the disaster.
1) There are no shortcuts. Building a winner takes time.
2) "Win Now" is a sure recipe for disaster.
3) "Move Up" in the draft rarely pays off; and NEVER WORKS in the long run.
4) Don't trade for somebody else's problems and head-cases.
5) You can patch with a few ex-starter veterans.
6) You can't construct a team of them. You simply grow Old & Slow
7) Patches seldom last for more than a year; or two at most. Expect it.
8) Don't be a braggart.
9) Employ a competent GM.
10) Employ a competent Head Coach.
For proof look at the Jesters.
They tried to "Win Now" by drafting, and trading and signing for right now. All they got is:
a) Players that can't play. Eg. Kennedy, Gholston, Ducasse, jailbird Ellis
b) Head-cases are on the market. Eg, Holmes, Cromartie, Plax
c) Guys Over the Hill or darn near. Eg. Bart Scott, Woody, Leonard.
d) Their present players grew Old and Slow with no one to take their place. Eg. Woody, Ellis, Pace, etc.
They ignored the head-cases for some fools with athletic ability. These guys were available from other teams for a reason. Cancers spread.
They tried to "Trade Up" using up two or three draft picks for a single high choice. Sometimes you win; eg. Revis. Mostly you lose; eg. Kennedy, Gholston. But eventually you run out of players to groom and restock your team, EVERYTIME!
The Jets are braggarts. Everone plays harder to beat them. Their fans all have Tourette's syndrome and are equally full of braggadocio. They are all easy to hate.
By contrast, Belichick is notorious for never degrading his opponents, and talking at length resulting in saying nothing at all. He seldom says anything and the real contest is to get him to admit what day and time it is. President Coolidge worked the same way but his technique was to simply say nothing. Once a Lady said she bet that she could get him to say more then two words. To which he said: "You Lose!"
Depth wins in a long 16 + Playoff season. Extra draft picks give you that depth. EVERYTIME!
The next time some Pats poster says "Trade Up", I want to point to the consequences: the Niew Yawk Jest.
The JEST finished 8-8; exactly where I predicted that they would in the preseason. Next season they will be lucky to win 5 games and will finish #4 in the AFCE. Wrecks will get his walking papers and another rebuilding will commence. Maybe they will actually hire a competent GM & HC.
