What's more important? Player personnel or coaching. I realize it's a combination of the two, but can coaching overcome bad personnel? Can good players overcome bad coaching?

GM is first. HC is second.

The Patriots best years were when Bill the GM had a good stretch of drafts and loaded up the team for Bill the coach.

Andy Reid got over the hump Veach identified a bunch of diamonds that Andy could run with.

It's no secret that John Schneider basically built the Legion of Boom in Seattle and once he stopped having good drafts Carroll wasn't able to keep the team elevated.

It's like asking who is more important. The racecar driver or the guy building the car. The best race car driver will win if you keep things close. But they aren't winning if they have a clearly inferior car.

Players and strong team captains all day long across all sports.
Strong veteran presence and captains nurture the rookies .... we have fallen so far from that blueprint.
What strong veterans have we signed ... damn we have Mac Jones as a captain ... Mac no balls Jones ... WTF.

The HC nurtures that with their open door policies and respect of the veterans.
The GM needs to find these players ... we haven't in recent years ... we let the potential leaders get away.

IMO ... gm then players then HC who has respect of the veterans ... then OC/DC then positional coaches.
No building stands without a good footing ... then foundation ... and so on.
Without a good GM to gather the foundation ingredients no coach can be successful there are no steel beams pounded to the bedrock.

Bill is a great game planner, excellent coach at teaching fundamentals.
Lackluster GM, not a motivator.

We could do worse but I think we could do better as well.

Coaching can overcome bad personal. Period. It doesn’t matter how much talent you have. Without structure and leadership that talent will eat itself due to selfishness. That’s what made Brady the GOAT … he understood chain of command

this year would be proof that coaching can not overcome bad personnel. Bill isnt a bad coach. but if your team is stocked with such low talent theres not much he can do...

It’s both. You need someone who can bring in talented roster, and a coach who can put together game plans they can execute and win with. But like hockey and goalies, and baseball and pitching, you have to have a good QB, otherwise there is little hope no matter how good the rest of your team is. That doesn’t mean you don’t need a strong team to win it all, but just that there’s one component that can doom the rest of it sucks.

2020 Bucs-GM is more important
2023 Chargers-HC is more important
2023 Patriots-GM made the difference

You can't answer it directly without realizing each team works differently.

Exactly. Good coaching more often than not gets the best out of their players. If the players suck then that's a low ceiling. There's only so much a coach can do. A coach really can't turn an awful team into a good one.

And vice versa... bad coaching can turn what should be a good team into a terrible one. Case in point: Chargers
