So what exactly do you think he was wrong about in that article?
The result? A win on the scoreboard but a defeat for anyone under the impression that this team was just a few plays from being elite.
This defense badly needs the front seven to become dominant. They need to be able to consistently shut down the run both up the middle and to the outsides, and they need a consistent pass rush outside of Jones. Ninkovich started getting there at the end, thankfully. If the front seven can be dominant down the stretch, as they were in the playoffs last year, then it will relieve a lot of stress for what is really a very porous secondary. The front seven bucked up at the end of the 4th quarter and in overtime, but they contributed to the issues throughout the game. There was no pass rush outside of Chandler and the Jets WR's kept taking what they pleased over the middle and down the field.
We're still screwed if the secondary continues to be this bad. Without proper ball skills, the pass rush isn't going to negate the '**** it I'm going deep' strategy that Flacco and Wilson beat us with. That's literally all you have to do against this defense is throw one up. Dennard and Dowling will probably need to have gift from above type progression over the course of the season if we are going to have a shot at winning anything.
The secondary is always going to be an issue throughout the year. But if the front seven can get dominant, as it did down the stretch in 2011, we can at least mask it 3 plays out of 5 (best case scenario, obviously).
