Actually I find him usually fair and doesnt always critique the pats like most other boston writers do and even supports the team. just my opinion.

Why is it not fair for a sportswriters to opine about certain negative aspects of the team? Or is the Boston sports media supposed to live in Orwellian 1984...

I'm happy that the team won, but I don't think the players are playing up to their potential. Because it's Week 7-8 this leaves room for optimism, but it is nonetheless troublesome to see the same mistakes uncorrected for five straight weeks...

This is really just a recap of what we already knew and a 'no *****' article.

The team obviously has issues but its not the end of the world. Issues can be fixed. We have what should be a win against the Rams and then a bye week...lets see if things can get turned around there.

If I were his journalism 101 professor, I'd say it failed to make a point about anything. My feeling is that Curran is trolling on this messageboard and waits for someone to make a coherent argument about something and then makes that his next written or CSNE rant.

He doesn't want to give the NY Jets the credit they deserve for playing a tough, disciplined football game against the Patriots.

This team definitely has some flaws. I do think having Gregory and Chung back will help solidify the back end a bit. I don't think it's going to be great mind you, but better than the past few weeks have shown.

But I think Curran is a bit out there for this bit:

Any given Sunday. The Texans barely got by the Jets as well, winning by 6. The undefeated Falcons squeaked by the lowly Panthers (1-5) and Raiders (2-4), both at home. The Giants had to rally to beat Tampa and Washington. Amongst the potential "elite" teams, only the 49ers and Bears haven't struggled with an inferior opponent yet.

Yes, we dodged a bullet. Maybe even a cannon ball. But I don't think one tough game against an inferior opponent (that we somehow won) is an indictment against the type of team this is.

the success and failure of this team in 2012 will be predicated on how what the pats offense can do to help the pathetic defense.

They need to be able to consistently shut down the run both up the middle and to the outsides, and they need a consistent pass rush outside of Jones. Ninkovich started getting there at the end, thankfully. If the front seven can be dominant down the stretch, as they were in the playoffs last year, then it will relieve a lot of stress for what is really a very porous secondary. The front seven bucked up at the end of the 4th quarter and in overtime, but they contributed to the issues throughout the game. There was no pass rush outside of Chandler and the Jets WR's kept taking what they pleased over the middle and down the field.

The jets pass rush was no better than ours yet we had zero separation most of the night or at least there was very tight coverage by the jets. I cant understand why receivers get so wide open against the Pats. Do the players suck that bad, or is the scheme just crap. Last night the jets had guys open multiple times by 5-10 yards! One play they had a TE open by 15 yards that Sanchez never saw. The other thing that drives me nuts is we are supposed to have a strong top to bottom roster while the jets have no depth. If thats true why do they crush us on special teams? I know the DMC return was a win, but the other kickoffs favored the Jets. Very frustrating watching a D that refuses to try anything creative. I sit there and think what are they afraid of giving up 328 yards passing to a QB that cant get out of his own way against any other team? Im happy for the win, and I agree a win is a win. The definition of insanity or stupidity is to do the same things over and over and expecting different results.
I'd rather go by having a train fall on me than by attach from killer bees! Please start blitzing and force mistakes rather than hope for them!!

Yeah it's probably going to stay an issue, the thing is can these guys at least perform somewhere around the level of the Randall Gay/Asante Samuel(well before he was an elite CB)/Troy Brown level of 2004. It probably will never be a good set of DB's but IMO it can't afford to stay this bad.

The front seven stepped up big time at the end of regulation to hold the Jets to field goals and in OT to win the game. The Jets could get nothing on the ground and the pocket was messy for Sanchez at the end.

The play of the season so far is the last play of the game when the pass rush slammed the door on Matt Sanchez and the Jets.

If the front seven can get that kind of pressure on a more consistent basis, a lot will improve on this defense. I'd still like to see more stunts and blitzes on plays where it is fairly obvious the opponent is going to throw the ball into soft coverage.
