I just heard felger on EEI mention to Adam Schefter that the Pats may could make a case for compensation IF the Browns are able to lure Pioli away from the Pats.

In taking a look at the Pats website Pioli is listed under Jonathan Kraft as "Vice President - Player Personnel." Mike Reiss mentions it would take a Parcells deal (executive Vice President - Player Personnel) to get Pioli to leave. Sounds like this is already what Pioli technically is.

Would this be the next shoe to drop if Pioli bolts? Would you see the pats getting involved in a mess like this. However, BB does have an obligation to protech the franchise and act in the best interest of the club. sounds like they may have prepared for this all along??

The wording of the title Executive VP - Player Personal could technically be considered a step up, so the Pats may not be able to seek compensation. But, if they can, I'm sure they will at least try.

It's not the title that matters, it's the job description.

Of course. It is a simple issue. Does Belichick report to Pioli? Does Pioli make all decisions not made by the Krafts? As Executive VP for the Browns will the coach report to Pioli?

A case could be made, but not a winning one. The choice was made long ago when it was determined that Belichick does not report to Pioli.

There was a lengthy PFT article a few days ago saying the Patriots might be able to block Pioli - given the relationship I imagine Belichick will tell him he won't block him nor examine compensation as long as Pioli doesn't raid the Patriots' coaching and front office personnel.
