COLE: Will The Patriots Take the Ball Out of Brady's Hands and Run the Ball?
    By: Ian Logue

Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports has an article this morning focusing on whether or not the Patriots will take the ball out of Tom Brady's hands this year and instead try and focus on putting it in the hands of runningbacks Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen....

Why would this not work in the regular season?

because the refs let more go during the post season and most teams don't have personnel to do it. Though replacement refs it could be a whole different situation.

Fortunately, we'll know soon enough :)

It doesn't work because it's an idiot paragraph.

Welker catches ball and game over....Gronk healthy and the game is over before halftime....it's not some Giants line "imposing will". That's simply beyond stupid.

Classic case of some buffoon who thinks he knows something and tortures an answer to "prove" what he thinks he knows.

Bottom line. Run when you have to run.

re: Jason Cole: Pats need to run the ball more

I think he misses his own point. It's not more, it's more efficiently or better. They have to be capable of running the ball and moving the chains or pushing the pile when everyone knows they are. And they have to be capable of gashing opposing D's for chunks of yards every now and again so they will have to worry about that aspect of the game.

On SIRIUS radio the hosts were discussing another team but in the same context. An effective run game must do at least 2 things...
    1. Get those short yards when the other team knows you're running and has 8 in the box
    2. Be enough of a breakaway threat on occasion that their LBs and safeties can't "ignore" the threat of a long run and cheat by adding to pass coverage

Loved BJGE but he brought us #1 on most occasions, and was no threat on #2. Perhaps this cheating on pass coverage is a major reason BB wants somebody who is a breakaway threat (Ridley if ever healthy) vs another plugger like Molden.

cole makes some good points. the key is to FINISH close games, which we couldn't do in 06, 07 and 12. a running game will take the pressure off of brady. into the fourth quarter hopefully ridley can kill some clock. there are going to be days when brady is off like last year's AFCCG. tht's when ridley has to take over.

re: Jason Cole: Pats need to run the ball more

We need to be able to run the ball well enough that when we are in are base 2 TE set on 1st down other teams aren't already in their nickel package that happened way to much last year. Becasue of our OL situation I think will have to be more committed to the run game this year.

Somewhat related note - Patriots.com has a clip of previous Pats-Titans game, including the one in Nashville from late 2006. I was AMAZED how big Corey Dillon was. And by 'big' I don't mean 'fat.' He was one big SOB. With a back like 'clock-killin Corey Dillon,' its easier to run out the clock. Can Ridley or Bolden do that for us? I don't know.

Have you seen the FB on Miami.....Jorvorskie Lane.....277 lb....down from 300 lb. If and when Hightower and Lane collide....a seismic event may occur.

re: Jason Cole: Pats need to run the ball more

Sorry, but adamantly disagree with an increased running game. The Pats of the Brady era have been successful because of what they accomplish by passing the football.

It is, IMO, sheer stupidity to go away from what has proven to be successful.

re: Jason Cole: Pats need to run the ball more

The Pats need to run the ball better in certain situations, but I disagree that they need to run the ball more. The fact of the matter is that Pats were 17th in rushing attempts last year. That is more than Saints (20th) or the Packers (26th). So the Pats ran the ball more than other two most high powered offenses in the league last year.

I think they need to run better on first downs. I don't have the stats, but the run game put the Pats in too many 2nd and longs last year because although BJGE rarely lost yards he also didn't get more than 3-4 yards on first down a lot of the times and many times it was only 1-2 yards. I hope Ridley will be more adept at getting 5-6+ yards on first down.

I also don't think the Pats were nearly as efficient at running to close out games to maintain leads. That is another area they need to work on.

Yes, besides making the short 1-3 when absolutely needed, and providing enough threat to break one so LBs and safeties can't cheat on receivers we do need to be able to run out the clock. Literally.

re: Jason Cole: Pats need to run the ball more

I want to see us win with brady throwing 10-12 passes max and just run it down teams throats, just once. I'm talking running all three downs in a row and the defense knows its coming and just can't stop it. By the time fourth quarter rolls around, defenses are just exhausted and give way to tebo... i mean Brady time. He'll be able to stand in the pocket for hours and even pose for sculptures if he chooses to as he just does his thing.

re: Jason Cole: Pats need to run the ball more

Not sure it would have mattered with how our OL was dominated. And we did have Dillon in the '06 AFCC when we couldn't run the ball whatsoever in the 2nd half and blew a huge lead.

As for Cole's article, I refuse to believe that Antowain Smith was such a better runner than BJGE, if he was better at all. We were never very good at running the ball to put opponents away, the only exception was 2004 against the Colts but that was the only year we had an elite back. And I guess Maroney's performance in the 2007 AFCC was another exception, where that effort came from I don't know but it deserves mention. Aside from that, all we've ever been able to expect from the run is somebody who can keep defenses honest so Brady can do his thing. And unless Ridley overachieves bigtime, that's probably all we can expect from the run game for the remainder of TFB's career.
