The Patriots are reportedly planning to release SS Brandon McGowan.
This news comes on the same day free agent Dashon Goldson is visiting New England, though it's not clear if it's more than coincidental. McGowan was just signed a week ago. The Pats obviously didn't like what they saw early in camp.

Its a damn shame that injuries kept getting in his way. He played well when he was on the field.

If this is true, don't be surprised to see the Jets pick him up. They can use some help at saftey, and it may be their way of getting even for us picking up Ellis.

Solid-citizen vet, released early to give him a chance to catch on elsewhere?

Up to a point, and then he kind of disappeared. I think it was 2009. He was hitting everything in site and swallowing up TEs.

He had stretch of like four good games in 2009. I can't remember if he was slightly injured after that or just started sucking. No big loss.

I think that is when the injury bug started to bite him.

I remember he was having trouble with play action and discipline in pass protection and got replaced by Sanders. He seemed to get better at that as 2009 went along. His real strength was in helping make opposing tight ends disappear while simultaneously supporting the runas the big nickel safety, against guys like Gates, Clark, etc. He may simply have come back from injury short a step and no longer be able to do what he did best.

If they sign Dashon Goldson in his place, it is an upgrade.

Yeah, he had that early stretch where he was a monster. He was flying around, knocking people out, and causing a ton of turnovers. Then teams started to realize he was a liability in zone coverage. He became a non-factor for this team shortly thereafter.

Right now Rapoport is the only reporter that I can see that is stating that McGowan is about to be released. I guess we'll find out soon whether or not he has better sources than anyone else.

I hope this isn't true. I really liked his play. He forced fumbles and played hard for us. Even got Sanders benched for the most part of the 09 regular season

He int Manning when Cunningham forced a bad throw but I don't think Sanders is a crunch time player at all. I don't remember crunch time plays from him

    i got this from wikipedia
During the 2007 season, fellow safety Eugene Wilson lost his starting spot to Sanders, who went on to start 15 games in the regular season and Super Bowl XLII. He started 14 games in 2008, missing two games in December due to an injury. In March 2009, Sanders agreed to terms with the Patriots on a three-year contract. It was reported that Sanders turned down more money elsewhere to return to the Patriots.[1]
During an August 2, 2009 press conference, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick spoke of Sanders:
“ James is an excellent leader. He plays with a good level of confidence. He's a very good physical player. He's a tough kid. Football's important to him. He's a very committed player, spends a lot of time in the classroom, studying, learning, watching tape, making sure he knows his assignments. I think he's a leader for any young player, forget young player, for any player to emulate and follow. I think he's very professional and you would like to have 53 players like James on your team in terms of his work ethic, his toughness [and] being a teammate

^^ most coaches say good things about their players. BB has said great things about Maroney.
I know Sanders is good but I prefer a healthy McG
