Re: 2008 Patriots Roster – Projected 06-26-07

I don't believe that Bam Childress is Practice Squad Eligible. I am not sure about Kelvin Kight either. I think its much more likely that Brian Barthelmes ends up back on the practice squad.

Not sure that Elgin would make it to the practice squad with Denver out there lurking. I am sure that its gotten around how good he looked at mini-camp.

I see a trade of Hochstein by the Pats to ensure that Elgin stays with them.

In Kight's only accrued season, 2006, he dressed for 8 or fewer games, which qualifies him in that department.

It appears as if he was on the Packers' practice squad for at least 3 games in 2004, which added to his 2006 stint gives him 2 practice squad years. I'll have to check up on 2005, but we know he either falls under the Yates rule or is ineligible.

UPDATE: Looks like Kight was a cutdown by the Jags in 2005, and was out of football, not on their practice squad in 2005. So he's a Billy Yates rule player.

UPDATE: I was looking through ProFW's transaction archives, and Kight was actually signed to the Vikings' practice squad on 11/1/05, and finished the season on it, meaning he now has 3 years of practice squad experience and is thus ineligible to be on the practice squad ever again.

Injuries Occur

....
I wish we could carry like 60 players on the roster!

All of us would be wise
... at this stage of the proceedings ...
to carry 59 or 60 on our mock rosters
because injuries occur
... even in training camp!

Some injuries are real.
Some stem from prior conditions and lead to PUP.
Others lead to IR.

You and i cannot even begin to imagine
exactly who shall fall prey to
these eventualities.

But ... at various points in the run-up to the season ...
i think we are able to identify the 60 most likely players.

Re: 2007 Patriots Roster – Projected 06-26-07

It makes it easier if you add the shadow roster players too.

Vinny Testaverde QB
Corey Dillon RB
Troy Brown WR/DB
Don Davis LB
Tory James CB
Josh Miller P and
Mr. "X"

Perhaps if cut by their teams:
Bobby Hamilton DE
Willie McGinnest DE/OLB

Then the PS is easier to define:

Brian Barthelmes C/G
Clint Oldenberg OT
Mike Elgin C
Justin Rodgers OLB
LeKevin Smith NT
Santonio Thomas DE
Matt Gutierrez QB
plus Mr. "Y"

With James and Vinatierri on shadow,
Then there is room for the ST DBs:
Andrews DB
Spann CB
and the ST LBs:
Alexander ILB
Woods OLB
and the upset special
Mays/Lua over Larry Izzo
Larry becomes Mr. "X" on the shadow roster

Andrews and Woods had almost as many ST tackles as Larry who played the whole year, while they were partial year players. Spann was a gunner and good at it for the half season he played. I'm not sure if Andrews was a gunner too. So the gunners are Spann and Andrews.

The ST returners are
Hobbs & Welker and occasionally Maroney for KOR
and Faulk and Welker and Andrews (and Troy?) for PR
Gostkowski K, Bagher P

ST coverage people who have produced as well as the gunners and specialist kickers/returners are Woods, Alexander, Gay, Wilson, Scott, Hawkins, Mays, Sanders, Wright among others.

Re: 2007 Patriots Roster – Projected 06-26-07

Well, you've set two records: 13 defensive backs, and only one rookie.

OFFENSE (24-25)
1) I have no real problem with your choices, although we might have only 24 positions, waiting a few weeks to add Vinny, There is no need at Game One.
2) Mills could beat out the 6th receiver.
3) I strongly prefer your OL to any other.

DEFENSE (25-26)
4) We usually carry 7 DL's, 9 LB's, 9-10 DB's
5) It is critical to carry 7 DL's, even though two are usually inactive.
Brown will make the team as will a backup NT, probably Smith.
6) You are counting on Bruschi, Seau and Alexander inside. That's not good enough. In any case, you need a couple of more youngsters with potential, who are ST stars. Woods and Mays fill the bill.
7) There will be zero problems with Lua making the Practice Squad.
8) I have no problem with 10 defensive backs, but 13 is a bit much. We need only four CB's, since almost all the safeties can play corner or nickel. Hobbs, Scott, James and Gay are plenty. I agree with your list of safeties, although Andrews could give Mitchell a run for the last spot.

Just my .02 since I'm too lazy to actually start a roster from scratch...

1. Cut/trade one of the bottom 3 wr in lieu of Mills.

2. Gay, Hobbs, and James are probably the only "pure" cb's on the roster. Scott and Andrews can play safety. Meriweather and Wilson can play nickel/dime back. Their flexibility, and ST's ability, allows you to cut at least one of Mitchell and/or Spann. This frees up room for one of the DL guys, such as K. Brown to make the roster. If you cut both, it also gives one of the rookie LB's, Rogers or Lua, a roster spot. Mitchell and Spann end up on the shadow roster with Baker. We will need a db during the season. It is only a matter of time.

3. Troy Brown is a "utility" player. Count him as a 6th wr if you are going to have him on the team. I don't see his primary role as being on the defensive side of the ball.

4. Alexander/Mays/Woods. Not sure which but at least one makes it. You say Alexander, I say Woods. That means it will probably be Mays. Either way, at least one should stick.

5. I feel like one more defender "should" make the team for depth purposes. Either another LB or DL. I would assume that means either Troy Brown or Vinny has to go from above as I see no other fat to trim. If I had to pick I'd say to drop Vinny for now and bring him back as necessary. I'd love to have him on the 53 for the Super Bowl though. Send him off in style.

Re: 2008 Patriots Roster – Projected 06-26-07

I believe last year was his second. Childress was a rookie in 2005.

Then I stand corrected and he does have one last year. I could have sworn that we've had 3 years of "Bam Childress is the next Troy Brown" threads not including this year, but I guess not.

I think that with the new rules regarding concussions, that we could see the rosters expand to 55-57 with 47 allowed to be dressed. In addition to the 8 man practice squad. Or the Practice squad could be increased. Otherwise, teams are going to risk having less than 45 eligible players for games.

Yes, that is how often I believe concussions are happening in the game.

Re: 2007 Patriots Roster – Projected 06-26-07

It makes it easier if you add the shadow roster players too.

Vinny Testaverde QB
Corey Dillon RB - The Patriots and he have parted ways. He's not on the shadow roster.
Troy Brown WR/DB
Don Davis LB - Kind of hard to be on the shadow roster when you've filed your retirement papers.
Tory James CB
Josh Miller P and How is Miller on the Shadowroster when he's signed to a contract currently?
Mr. "X"

Perhaps if cut by their teams:
Bobby Hamilton DE
Willie McGinnest DE/OLB

Then the PS is easier to define:

Brian Barthelmes C/G
Clint Oldenberg OT
Mike Elgin C I don't see Elgin making it to the Practice Squad. Not with Denver always looking for young, AGILE, technique minded O-linemen for their zone blocking schemes.
Justin Rodgers OLB
LeKevin Smith NT
Santonio Thomas DE
Matt Gutierrez QB
plus Mr. "Y"

With James and Vinatierri on shadow, Vinatieri on the shadow roster? Are you drinking or something?
Then there is room for the ST DBs:
Andrews DB
Spann CB
and the ST LBs:
Alexander ILB
Woods OLB
and the upset special
Mays/Lua over Larry Izzo
Larry becomes Mr. "X" on the shadow roster

,

Woods would have had MORE special teams tackles than Izzo had Woods played ALL season. Woods got his tackles in 8 total games while Izzo got his in 19.

I see Mays going to the practice squad if anything.

Re: 2008 Patriots Roster – Projected 06-26-07

Having two number 84's will surely wreak havoc on opposing defenses. BB thinks of everything.

LOL!

Ben's gonna have to give it up!

Re: 2008 Patriots Roster – Projected 06-26-07

My stab at 2007:

WR - Dropped Washington

TE - Added TE 45 Garrett Mills

LB – Added 58 Pierre Woods

CB – Dropped Willie Andrews

S – Dropped Mel Mitchell and added 32 Rashaad Baker

Practice Squad:
QB 7 Matt Gutierezz; 43 RB Justise Hairston; T 76 Clint Oldenburg; LB 49 Oscar Lua; 51 Justin Rodgers; CB 35 Mike Richardson; maybe Elgin or Hilliard
(I don't think some of those guys you listed are qualified to be on the PS... maybe I am wrong)

------------------------------------------
PUP - Added WR 80 Troy Brown
------------------------------------------

That's interesting...PUP for Troy?

Is he hurt that bad?

Re: 2008 Patriots Roster – Projected 06-26-07

The Billy Yates rule allows for only a 3rd year of practice squad eligibility. And last year made 3 for Bam.

I am sure y'all are right. When it comes to things like Practice Squad, I am out of the loop and really not that into it.

Re: 2007 Patriots Roster – Projected 06-26-07

Woods would have had MORE special teams tackles than Izzo had Woods played ALL season. Woods got his tackles in 8 total games while Izzo got his in 19.

I see Mays going to the practice squad if anything.

Not only is it hard to be on the shadow roster when you've retired, but it's even harder when you're a member of the Pats coaching staff (Davis is now an assistant strength and conditioning coach).

Re: 2007 Patriots Roster – Projected 06-26-07

I think we put too much emphasis on the so-called "shadow roster". It is not a roster; it is simply players that pioli has on speed dial. Poteat and others have gone from the Patriot shadow roster to others teams as easily as they would have from the Practice Squad.

I don't keep a shadow roster list, although I do think that Vinny or Troy Brown could be reasonably placed on such a list since they are very unlikely to play for another team.

If O'Callaghan looks good in TC, could Kazcur be trade bait? Cleveland or Baltimore maybe? Both need an ORT.

Re: 2007 Patriots Roster – Projected 06-26-07

Comments in bold

------------------------------------------
Offense (25)

QB - 12 Tom Brady; 16 Matt Cassel; 10 Vinny Testeverde Only 2 guys on the roster with Vinnie by the phone

RB - 39 Laurence Maroney; 34 Sammy Morris; 33 Kevin Faulk; 44 Heath Evans

WR – 84 Randy Moss; 18 Donté Stallworth; 83 Wes Welker; 10 Jabar Gaffney; 87 Reche Caldwell; 15 Kelley Washington

TE - 84 Ben Watson; 88 Kyle Brady; 86 David Thomas I add Mills here, assuming he turns out to be a good special teamer

OL - 67 Dan Koppen ; 72 Matt Light; 70 Logan Mankins; 61 Stephen Neal; 77 Russ Hochstein; 68 Ryan O'Callaghan; 65 Wesley Britt; 74 Billy Yates

If Britt and O'Callahan look good, I can see the Pats trading Kazcur like they did Ashworth. I think there'd be a market for him for a 6th that could be a 5th depending on playing time. In the mean time the Pats could get by with only 8 on the OL because the PS will be littered with OLmen.

------------------------------------------
Defense (25)

DL – 93 Richard Seymour; 75 Vince Wilfork; 94 Ty Warren; 97 Jarvis Green; 99 Mike Wright The Pats aren't going into the season with fewer than 7 DLmen so add Smith and Brown

LB – 54 Tedy Bruschi; 50 Mike Vrabel; 96 Adalius Thomas; 59 Rosevelt Colvin; 55 Junior Seau; 53 Larry Izzo; 52 Eric Alexander The Pats will have at least 8 and probably 9 LBs. Right now I'll go with 8 so add Mays or Lua, depending on who is the better special teamer

CB – 27 Ellis Hobbs; 28 Tory James; 30 Chad Scott; 21 Randall Gay; 23 Willie Andrews; 80 Troy Brown; 31 Antwain Spann Samuel will be there for the start of the season. Troy Brown starts the year on PUP and if he plays it will be as a WR. They will carry 6 CBs. Spannn will have beat out either James or Gay, and Richardson will go to the PS

S – 37 Rodney Harrison; 25 Artrell Hawkins; 38 Brandon Meriweather; 36 James Sanders; 26 Eugene Wilson; 24 Mel Mitchell The Pats will only carry 11 DB, sorry Mel, we hardly knew you.
------------------------------------------
Special Teams (3)

K – 3 Stephen Gostkowski

LS – 66 Lonie Paxton

Offense (25)

QB - 12 Tom Brady; 16 Matt Cassel; 10 Vinny Testeverde - I would wager cash money Testeverde is not on the opening day roster.

RB - 39 Laurence Maroney; 34 Sammy Morris; 33 Kevin Faulk; 44 Heath Evans

WR – 84 Randy Moss; 18 Donté Stallworth; 83 Wes Welker; 10 Jabar Gaffney; 87 Reche Caldwell; 15 Kelley Washington - I'm dropping Washington with a perhaps drop Gaffney and adding Troy Brown

TE - 84 Ben Watson; 88 Kyle Brady; 86 David Thomas - I'm adding Mills based on how many times he was the oulet guy for Cassel last pre-season.

OL - 67 Dan Koppen ; 72 Matt Light; 70 Logan Mankins; 61 Stephen Neal; 77 Nick Kaczur; 71 Russ Hochstein; 68 Ryan O'Callaghan; 65 Wesley Britt; 74 Billy Yates - I'm dropping Yates, I figure we have guys from the PS we can call up if a guard emergency arrises.
------------------------------------------
Defense (25)

DL – 93 Richard Seymour; 75 Vince Wilfork; 94 Ty Warren; 97 Jarvis Green; 99 Mike Wright - I'm adding Kareem Brown and Le Kevin Smith, 7 DL seems to be the usual number

LB – 54 Tedy Bruschi; 50 Mike Vrabel; 96 Adalius Thomas; 59 Rosevelt Colvin; 55 Junior Seau; 53 Larry Izzo; 52 Eric Alexander - I'm adding Piere Woods and Oscar Lua. Woods is a special teams guy and until I see otherwise I am going to hold out hope for Lua.

CB – 27 Ellis Hobbs; 28 Tory James; 30 Chad Scott; 21 Randall Gay; 23 Willie Andrews; 80 Troy Brown; 31 Antwain Spann Adding Samuel, dropping Brown, Spann and James.

S – 37 Rodney Harrison; 25 Artrell Hawkins; 38 Brandon Meriweather; 36 James Sanders; 26 Eugene Wilson; 24 Mel Mitchell Dropping Mitchell
------------------------------------------
Special Teams (3) - No changes

K – 3 Stephen Gostkowski

P – 8 Josh Miller

LS – 66 Lonie Paxton
------------------------------------------
Practice Squad

WR 19 Kelvin Kight; WR 13 Bam Childress; TE 45 Garrett Mills; DL 95 Kareem Brown; DL 92 Santonio Thomas; LB 49 Oscar Lua - Dropping Mills, Brown, Lua, Childress. Adding Mike Eglin, Clint Oldenburg, Brian Barthelmes, Justin Rodgers, Cory Mays.
------------------------------------------
PUP

WR 17 Chad Jackson - When Healthy Takes Gafney's Spot
------------------------------------------
IR

DL 90 Le Kevin Smith Hopefully Empty
------------------------------------------
Holdout

CB 22 Asante Samuel Will be Empty
------------------------------------------

The practice squad is where I am the most sketchy as I have not memorized the rules. I think 8 OL is a distict possiblity this year as well as starting with 2 quarterbacks again. The RB, TE, and WR position is a bit loaded and keeping that talent around will trump the depth in the interior of the line.
