I posted this in alt.sports.football.pro.ne-patriots....
The Patriots have been accused of "running up the score" and generally
treating other teams poorly. Heh. Let's see what Indy has done:
1. vs. NO - W, 41-10
2. at Ten - W, 22-20
3. at Hou - W, 30-24
4. vs Den - W, 38-20
5. vs TB - W, 33-14
6. at Jax - W, 29-7
7. at Car - W, 31-7
Two close games and the other five games were won by 31, 18, 19, 22,
and 24 points (an average of 22.8 ppg). But of course nobody mentions
this because they are....well, they're the Colts, full of class and
dignity. Surely they would *never* be so dishonorable, would they?
Nah.
2004 - the year Peyton Manning broke the TD record with 49. Here are
some scores from the Colts that year:
35-14 over Oak
49-14 over Hou
41-10 over Chi
41-9 over Det
51-24 over Ten
49-24 over Den in the playoffs
In the Denver game, in the 4th quarter, ahead 35-17, Manning hit Wayne
for a 42 yard TD pass to make it 42-17. Manning threw for 458 yards
in that game.
In the Tennessee game, ahead 41-24 in the 4th quarter, Manning hit
Wayne for a 10 yard TD pass to make it 48-24. Manning threw for 425
yards in that game.
In the second half in the Detroit game, ahead 27-9, Manning hit
Harrison for a 10 yard TD pass. Then, with the score 34-9, Manning
hit Harrison for a 5 yard TD pass to make it 41-9.
In the Chicago game, in the 2nd half, ahead 27-3, Manning hit Wayne
with a 27 yard TD pass to make it 34-3.
In the 3rd quarter of the Texans game, with the Colts ahead 21-0,
Manning hit Stokley with a 69 yard TD pass to make it 28-0. Then,
ahead 35-7, Manning hit Clark with an 80 yard TD pass to make it 42-7.
I mean, nobody said anything then that Indy was running up scores, and
yet we have here many examples of Peyton Manning gunning for late 2nd
half touchdown passes with his team up by several TD on its helpless
opponent.
I do not deny (how could anyone?) that NE is taking great pleasure in
beating people to a pulp this year. But for anyone (i.e.,
Easterbrook) to suggest that people like Indy would never do this and
that BB is evil for "running up the score" conveniently forget that
Manning has made a career of doing this.
