Patriots sign WR Chris Hogan

I just don't understand how Hogan @ 4M is high given the market.
It probably isn't, but the market itself always is artificially high early in free agency. I don't think Hogan's worth that kind of money but if the Patriots do I'm willing to see how he performs here before passing judgment. The other shoe to drop might be cutting Amendola.

IDK about this contract. An average of 4M for year seems like a lot and is just a hair under what Edelman makes, Looking at some vids at him trying to get a feel for him

His positive points are his quickness which while not lightning quick is pretty good and he seems to have good hands and body control for his size. He can play outside a bit but his straight line speed is meh.

Overall a poor man's Edelman. A player I would like to have but I think that we sign him for less than 4M a year. He looks like a 2M a year player to me.

Actually I had to take down a vid i used cause it was just a fan channel i think. However search "wired for sound Chris Hogan" on youtube and you will find it.

there are lots of vids......the guy makes plays, and more than anything, he appears to do his job the way this team looks for

(re-posted after screwing up the numbers last time...)

Let's take a guess at the contract structure.

What we know is:
3 years, $12m total
$5.5m cap hit in Year 1

Nicely front-loaded with the Year 1 roster bonus, plus an easy cut in Year 3 due to the minimal dead money from the signing bonus.

(Salary cap-wise, roster bonuses are fully assigned to the year in which they're paid, rather than being pro-rated)

Looks good to me.

because of the way the pats execute their offense, he is probably most valuable here

I think he will make things happen here and that's all that really matters

I'd hate to cut Dola. I love the core of Edelman, Dola, Martin, and Hogan if healthy, that's a lot of shifty guys out there to cover. Maybe throw in Boldin as an outside the numbers guy.

I agree with the Boldin idea. That would be a very nice 5-WR group. No burners, but when have the Pats really had an outside burner since Moss?

On another note, I know we've discussed this, but any chance Belichick thinks about a guy like Hogan and calls Brady and says, "I'm thinking about getting this guy. Look at this film and tell me if you think you could work with him." ??

For those who claim BB is smart for not chasing and overpaying players, please explain to me how 4M/yr. to a guy who’s been on 4 different practice squads, and has 1 (ONE) TD reception under his belt, makes sense. PLEASE EXPLAIN. If you ask me, this is Scott Chandler experiment all over again.

I don't think Belichick would ever allow his players to have any influence over personnel. It allows them to get big-headed and might create locker room problems - "I brought you in Chris, I can get rid of you too", etc

It's the sort of thing that dumb coaches would have let Manning get away with, but BB's in charge around here.

One comment on the calls for LaFell's release being a mistake, he was heading into his last year, I suspect they decided not to re-sign him and move on with a group that won't be UFA after this year. I think we all know $3M for one year was a solid deal for LaFell but forward planning says it's time to get a group signed beyond this season and LaFell wasn't part of that.

Wes Welker's 1 TD with the LOLphins says hi.

I like it, strengthens the Pats and weakens a division opponent.

Are you referring to Hogan or the TE the Patriots just signed? Because Hogan has 6 TD receptions over the past two seasons.

EDIT: I'm thinking of Harbor - and they haven't signed him yet, I don't think.

Yeah I'd probably agree. Brady has said before he has no influence, not sure if it's necessarily true though.

Just watched every ball thrown Hogan's way in 2015. His numbers would've spiked if the Bills had a capable pocket QB.

I really like Hogan's route-running ability, has good double moves, knows how to weave through various zones, good sideline comebacks.

Hogan can line up anywhere and he can absolutely take a good hit after the catch. He finishes every single play. I like that a lot.

Agree. Amendola is an important part of this team but I do think they will ask him to restructure. Hopefully they get it done because they need to upgrade the team not swap pieces. If they add Streater as well then they will have a good receiving corps next season.

Its really going to suck when he turns into a dynamite player for the Patriots.

I liked him as a Bill. We needed WR help and losing Hogan instead of Robert Woods hurt us,

the only red flag for me is again a OK bills players whos 2 best career games are vs the pats

yes, his cap hit is too high, but the pats are in the position of only having to tap it if they need to ....... the contract as is is not holding anything up ...... visiting his contract after the draft or later serves the pats better then right now in the heat of the FA moment....especially since the pats are relatively inactive....no reason to let it sit for now as that works for them

Bear in mind, I'm not advocating cutting him immediately. I could only see that being the case if they don't come to terms on a restructure. Especially if there is another FA at a position of need out there that they have their eye on but can't afford right now. I would prefer that he restructures and the team keeps him. That would be a nice redundancy in place (between he and Hogan) that we didn't have in 2015 when Edelman went down.
