Schlereth: I would be shocked if Denver wins

Yup, the running game splits before and after Hightower's injury bear it out in a startling way. If Hightower plays the full game, the Broncos don't get to 17.

DMC agrees

Devin McCourty thinks the key for the Patriots will be to shut down the Denver running game that put up 179 yards in their regular season victory over the Patriots.

“It’s kind of a direct correlation for us that we’ve got to make sure we go out there, play well in the run game and I think that will set up the rest of our defense,” McCourty said, via the Boston Herald. “I think we’ve got to try and get them behind and try to play good defense on first down and not let them just pound us and be able to pound the ball.”

I'm honestly not sure which game you're referring to--2007? That wasn't shocking...

Well, I and everyone watching with were shocked. The Patriots were huge favorites to win that game. On paper that was a huge statistical mismatch.

We've Got Eli Manning's Back
Super Bowl XLII was the greatest statistical mismatch in Super Bowl history. In fact, it was the greatest statistical mismatch in any NFL championship game since the 13-0 Bears faced the 8-5 Giants way back in 1934. (The Giants, by the way, engineered a shocking upset in that game, too, the second ever NFL title tilt.)

Consider the statistical full weight and breadth of the statistical mismatch in Super Bowl XLII:

  • The Patriots boasted the best record in NFL history (16-0)
  • The Giants were 10-6, tied for the worst record of any Super Bowl champion (1988 49ers, 2010 Packers).
  • The Patriots boasted the best passer rating of any Super Bowl combatant (116.0), the second best mark of all time.
  • The Giants fielded the worst Defensive Passer Rating of any champion in NFL history (83.4)
  • The Patriots boasted the greatest scoring differential in NFL history (+315)
  • The Giants fielded the lowest scoring differential of any champion in NFL history (+22)
  • The Patriots scored 589 points, the most by any team in history
  • The Giants surrendered 351 points, the second most by any Super Bowl champion
  • The Patriots were 6 games better than Giants in regular season – the biggest differential in any championship game in NFL history.

Yup it's all a big jinx attempt and a way to motivate his old team.

Yeah, the stats definitely backed the Pats. And for sure I was thinking they would win. But....as fans, we saw they weren't playing the same the second half of the season. We saw the Giants keep it close (although in a very different type of game). It was disappointing as hell, I guess surprising, but not shocking, I don't think.

But anyway, let's not talk about that game anymore....

the games "we're supposed to win" in the playoffs have always been the ones we lose. there are lots of good reasons why denver can win: they're at home, they have a strong defense, all week they're being told they have no shot. it's going to be tight, watch.
Huh? We are 22-8 with Brady in the playoffs, and have gone to at least the CCG ten times. How is that a history of losing games we are supposed to win?
5 of the 8 losses were in CCG or SB.

Biggest shock of my life in a sporting event. Aside from MAYBE Villanova over Georgetown.

He's right..their OL isn't good. We can get pressure big time if we decided to bring it which we hope

It is, possibly, Manning's last chance to "tie" his brother Eli with 2 SB rings. That is something to think about. Pats certainly do look good coming into this game, but, it is in Denver and we have seen funny "bounces" out there that did not turn out in the Pats' favor. Hopefully, by around 6:30 Sunday we could all be singing "We are on to SB50!".

I don't think Denver can beat either NFC team.

Apparently I'm in the minority considering the Patriots underdogs in this game. No way is this a sure thing. No freakin' way. It's going to be a struggle to come out on top.

I do not think any realistic fan here can say a win is a "sure thing". Having a high degree of confidence is one thing, which many here have considering the condition of the team going into this game versus the first game played in Denver this season. Brady has all his weapons and that is what buoys the confidence here.

Brady is missing his No. 1 and No. 2 running backs and starting left tackle.

White and Bolden have stepped up decently and Jackson may be a key. As for the o-line, they did well last week. Missing Edelman and Amendola was a far worse situation than what they are missing this weekend.

Look how close the playoffs were last year when Brady had all those weapons. Take three of them away this year. And an away game. And in Denver. And add in the clear animus of the NFL management against the Patriots organization. And the defense was even better last year too.

Oh, and I don't believe Edelman is 100% either.

Anyone who is confident going into this game is deluded.

He's trying to pump up the donkeys. Honestly it's very tough to win playoff games on the road. We have a bad history in denver. I think they need to build a big lead to win this game. I would feel extremely confident if the game was at home. I think we are better then them but that doesn't mean squat. Games are won on the field.

The "playoffs" weren't close last year, the Ravens and Seahawks games were. The Colts game was a blowout. Every game has to be analyzed differently.

Any given Sunday, etc., but I think you're deluded if you're not confident going into this game.
