Examining the salary cap consequences of the Patriots trading for Calvin Johnson

Miguel Benzan

Hopefully, I have provided some background information on the salary cap consequences and likelihood of the Patriots trading for Calvin Johnson.

Income the "sign the beast" crusaders.

Only if the Lions are stupid do they relinquish their rights to Calvin Johnson without getting something back (draft picks/players).
They're pretty stupid so I wouldn't bet against it.

One other scenario I didn't see explored was if he actually comes back and Detroit can't negotiate a new deal for him. I remember last season, there were articles talking about his $24M cap number and a potential $11M savings if he were to be cut.

If Johnson's goal was to play for a contender, he should have shut up about retirement and forced the Lions to deal with whether they wanted to keep him or not. Now the team can let him retire, get the same cap savings, and hold his rights for a potential trade.

I have a feeling Amendola and lafell might be on the way out regardless of what happens in the playoffs.
I'm not sure of LaFell's contract status but Amendola has a multiyear deal. I'd like to see Danny stay, he's a good complement to Edelman. What the Pats need is a field-stretching beast, although I don't know if Calvin Johnson is the right guy.

Me too unless Dola agrees to another restructure which I think he might. We need a receiver and the team is going to be awesome already in 2015 since everyone is basically returning. Nice way to boost the team and not totally mess up the cap. All depends if Calvin takes a Revis type deal, we can't do anything long term. We're the exact opposite of the Lions, he knows here we will definitely be in the playoffs you can't say that about any other team in the NFL.

He's not the receiver he was and even at a reduced salary would still cost over $10m per year. I would like to see an upgrade at the outside WR position as in my mind Lafell is nothing special, but not at what CJ costs and where he is in his career. I'd rather spend that money on our own players like Jones, Collins, etc....

Their new GM is Bob Quinn, who was the pro scouting director for the Patriots. Have to imagine that he is not stupid.

People said something very similar about Randy Moss...I think we all remember how that turned out.

Good stuff, Miguel. As always.

So is there any chance Detroit outright releases him? I thought that was the most likely scenario since he'd count $24 million towards the cap next year. I understand it's a bit less of a cap hit if acquired through a trade, but still, why doesn't every team just hold off on trade offers, thus forcing Lions into a) paying $24 million, or, b) releasing him

He should retire, then the Patriots could sign this unheard of free agent off the street called John Calvinson, who's never played in the NFL before.

nothing that makes economic sense for us also makes economic sense for CJ. He is not going to take a big enough cut to make it happen.

And Moss was a year younger and restructured his deal to a 1 yr team friendly $3m base with $1.75m in incentives. If CJ is willing to do something similar to Moss than by all means go get him, but at $10m + I don't think he's worth it at this point in his career.

Maybe we should trade for Travis Kelce.

Chad Johnson really did become Chad Ochocinco. Of course when the Patriots signed him, we seemed washed up.
