Former Pats QB Ryan Mallett misses team flight to game

O'Brien is done there after this year. Rick Smith vetoing the decision to cut a guy that has acted like baby is a Smith power demonstration. Basically telling O'Brien "You traded for him, deal with it"
A coach with cojones would walk. If you can't control your own locker room by eliminating cancer you're being doomed to failure.

If you're an owner and you've got a GM and a coach who have to engage in a power struggle, you should give them both their walking papers. That's not a successful working relationship, and it reflects on them both.

I'd say it puts Smith's job in jeopardy more than O'Brien's.

Pete Carroll says "Oh Noes ".

The trade was a low risk one.
If coach feels the guy needs to be cut, let him cut the guy.

I too believe O'Brien should resign.
It will serve him well in the long run.

Have you seen Texans lately? I would too and should have taken BIG Vince with him.

This kind of looks to me like Smith is afraid one of he or O'Brien could get canned at the end of the year, so he's making sure Bill is stuck with a s*** situation at QB in hopes that he's the one who goes.

In the Hammers mind he thinks he's better that Hoyer but the stats say otherwise. Seriously Mallett is not even a serviceable back-up third sting at best. We couldn't even get a Fourth Rounder for the guy.

Never got the impression that Mallett was the sharpest tool in the shed..

Did anyone see the TV interview of him during pre-season about three years ago? He was wholesale stupid.

O'Brien is a BB disciple.
BOB is a former BB employee. That does not a disciple make. I don't see anything BB-like in what he does. He's less a BB disciple than even, say, Dean Pees.

Tiffani Thiessen > Mallet.
Isn't that the Saved By The Bell chick?

What does she have to do with Ryan Mallett?

Mallett is more like Screech...sheer idiot.

I don't get it. We are talking about a conditional 7th round pick here. It's not like they signed him to $20m in guarantees.

It was an organizational decision to bring on Mallett and if this is the reasoning, Smith is being a short-sighted, vindictive ass. If Smith does have final say then he is as much to blame for the decision to bring him on board.

This behavior is why teams lose and companies fail. They force themselves to live with mistakes.

What should be happening is that BOB should ask Smith to find him a replacement QB before he cuts Mallett. Once they find someone- cut him.

What a disaster down there.

My comment was made in the specific context of how BOB had been taught to handle Ryan Mallett's repeated tardiness, not in comparing BOB to BB as a coach overall. It is clear how BB handles tardiness by his players. Heck, he even sent Revis home when he arrived at practice late, and apart from that one incident Revis was very much a professional during his year with the Pats. We all know what happened to Jonas Gray when he overslept after landing on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

I shudder to think of what BB would do if a player was tardy twice in one season.

Because of BOB's background with BB, I expected that BOB would want to cut Mallett. Evidently he does, but he has been overruled by his GM Rick Smith. As n6249c mentioned earlier in this thread, that type of coach - GM conflict doesn't really make either one of them look too good.

Why did anyone think Mallett was any good? Garpollo is so far ahead of him in only a season and a half.

So either the Rick Smith thing was a lie or Mallet has continued his baby act today. Wouldn't even be surprised if the whole act has been to get released.

Just no way I believe that McNair sided with O'Brien over Smith on that one. Rick Smith seems to doo no wrong in McNair's eyes. Should have been gone with Kubiak, instead they gave him an extension.

Just adding a bit to the post above....

The #Texans have released Ryan Mallett and are working to bring back T.J. Yates as their backup quarterback.

Looks like BOB wins this round.

Arguably, the real winners here are the Patriots. They got what they needed out of him (someone to keep the backup seat warm for a couple of years), got something for him, and then shipped him off before he could hurt anything in Foxboro.

So now, what's left for Mallet? Am I wrong or as of now every team is more or less set at QB, even with borderline mediocre QBs but that have the advantage of playbook knowledge? I don't see any team with the situation pretty bad at QB, like the Cardinals last year with that scrub that couldn't complete a pass.

Maybe the Steelers could use him for a game or 2, I don't know how many games Ben will miss and I don't even know what kind of injury Vick suffered.
