The "NASCAR" package? Does this include Brown and Easely, who are both unproven? What makes you so sure they'll be great? What have either one of them done to prove being above average starters?

A BB/Patricia has been worse than 7th from last before... pretty recently, in fact. So what makes it hard to believe it'll happen again...?

I'm not writing the team off but this defense is only rated top 10 by pats fans and it's a bit ridiculous.

Interior DL, every CB, and SS are all huge question marks, are they not?

Do you even know what the "NASCAR" Package is?
How are you so sure that Brown and Easily are weaknesses? As you stated, they are unproven.

As for your statement, the BB/Patricia defenses that were 25 and 26 in yards had far less talent on the defense than this team does.

No. Pats fans are rating this team as a TOP 10 defense in the only state that counts. Points allowed. And that is where they will be at the end of the year.. Possibly even top 5. What is ridiculous is you trolling and giving out dislikes despite people making valid arguments against your blathering.

I guess i'm not allowed to disagree with your argument?

You stated feel free to disagree. I post an opposing view, which is disagreement in my world, and you threw down a dislike.

You get what you deserve and frankly you have proven that your word is worthless. Just look at the smack down you've gotten in your own thread.

Go cry into your Manning and Luck jerseys.

I reserve judgement on the front 7 until the NE/ Dallas game. That being said, the bend but don't break philosophy from 2005- 2013 earned lots of wins but no trophies and BB had to break the bank last year to buy elite secondary players and secure a trophy. Unfortunately, the NE D appears to be bending again. Lots of crappy QBs ahead so the pain should be minimal.....until the playoffs.

Avoid Green Bay
Except the bend, don't break philosophy wasn't just from 2005-2013.. That's been the philosophy Belichick's entire coaching stay.. And he's gotten 4 trophies and 6 trips to the SB..

You could say that the defense very nearly "broke" in the Baltimore and Seattle games last year. More so in the Baltimore game, as the Ravens were able to score almost at will. Against Seattle, they played well for a large portion of the game, but they gave up numerous big plays that led to points, just as those defenses from 2005-2013 that you mentioned. It's true that the defense came up with game sealing INTs at the end, but only because the offense was able to put a ton of points on the board and gave us a chance. Also, both of those defenders who made those clutch plays are still on the roster.

Anyways, it's only been one game.

Hey! It's not about winning the game. It's about compiling statistics about the number of yards not allowed!

Yeah, Health, Depth, Scheme or points allowed apparently have nothing to do with getting to a super bowl.

Pittsburg had one of the top ranked offenses last year and scored 21 (including a last second junk TD) on this defense last week.

No it was not pretty but who thinks this will be the same team in week 7?

This thread reminds me of the time I went to the Zoo to see the Albino Gorilla.

He picked up his fecal matter and threw it right at the Plexi glass window causing some of the crowd to shreek "Eeewww".

Guess what? Some of it stuck.

Yeah I'm pretty sure we won the super bowl on the last drive because of "bend don't break". I don't know what else causing a turnover at the one yard line would be classified as. Mental midget if you think otherwise

It's only week 2, who knows what the defense will eventually be. But after today it will either be the best ever defense. Or the team is washed up defense. Both opinions will be completely overblown and subject to a complete reversal the following week!

I think it's top 10 as it stands now. There's room for improvement, and Pats have a whole year to do that. It's a solid starting point for the team. They know what they must improve on, and they will deal with those things week to week until defense is top 3.

Ninkovich is a great player but he is not an all-pro. Ninkovich does not demand double teams and he is not a game changer.
What is he? The best player on our defensive line.
Chandler Jones comes in at second, as an above average DE.
Our interior DL is unproven, rookies, or coming off of injuries.

Why is this defensive line praised so much? In the other thread about the defense, people were comparing this defense to the 2013 Panthers (second in the league). Does anyone truly believe this defense can be top 5? Seriously?

This is a 15th-25th ranked defense and most likely in the 20s in everything except for scoring.
Feel free to disagree and we'll see who can come back and say "i told you so."
I sent Bill an e-mail with this post attached. Here was his response:

Some thoughts:
  • I would guess that due to BB's general focus on STs and more important the focus on giving up few TOs, BB's defenses have better starting field positions than other teams'. Thus, some of their scoring defense success isn't to their credit; it literally is because of their better starting position.
  • Better starting field position might mean, on average, that you give up a few more yards, because the opposition has more POTENTIAL yards they can get per drive.
  • Except for the previous point, there's nothing good about giving up yards.
  • Red zone defense is indeed a huge fraction of the total success or failure of a defense. On many drives, it's 4/7 of the total. (On others, it's 0/7.)
  • Those who say that the only thing that matters on defense is scoring are a little bit wrong. In line with my first point, defenses that score or that hand their offenses good field position are doing better than those who do not. This is a function of takeaways, return yardage, and also of -- yes -- yardage allowed.
  • Ideally, yardage and scoring would be evaluated per possession, not per game.

That's some impressive trolling.

Doesn't seem like you read my post too carefully considering I talked about both scoring defense and the "15-25th" thing in the post.

I read your post, word for word, and that was apparently obvious to everyone except you.

Pitt's offense is embarassing the Niners.

We may have an untested secondary, but our LB corps is the best in the league. We are a fast defense and have skill in the pass rush. I don't think we will have the best defense, but i think top 10 is an achievable goal.
