Amazing Belichick Article

This quote from Al Groh stands out for me:
" He’s interested in anybody and everybody’s opinion because out of that might come a good idea. That was the case even when he knew he wanted to do.

Why does it stand out for me? Because it's something that stood out in "Do Your Job". And it goes against the idea that floated around a few years back that Belichick's coaches were pushovers and wouldn't stand up to him..

Another quote that stands out is one from McGinest. And it goes back to something we've heard previously about Belichick and this offense:

He would break down both sides of the ball and be instrumental in planning every phase of the game. Other coaches can’t do that.

This is another amazing quote from McGinest:

“He’ll put it up on the board,” McGinest said. “He’ll say, ‘This is what’s going to happen. This is how they’re going to attack you. If you do X, Y and Z, you’ll be okay.’ And it seems like every single week, it happens. So it’s not hard to play in that system.”

This tells me that, as a player, to be successful with the Pats, you have to be able to put your ego aside. If you can put your ego aside, you'll be successful with the Pats. If not, you won't last (*cough* Reggie Wayne *cough*)

Heck, I've never seen other head coaches COACH the way BB does on the sidelines. He is always coaching the defensive players up….its fun to watch if you are at a game.

Anybody else remember a play that happened in Buffalo? I'm hazy on the details now but I think he Bills fumbled and the ball rolled out of bounds in the end zone and the Patriots player knew what to do because BB had quizzed them and they had practiced it. Not something that happens ever day but they had practiced it!

After the SNF game in San Diego last year, Belichick said he was confused a few times, because when the Pats are on offense he has his back to the field coaching up defenders. So if he hears a cheer he assumes something bad has happened. He ended up being confused a few times because the cheers meant something good had happened since the stadium was swarmed with Pats fans.

This was fun to watch in the last Super Bowl. Every time the camera showed Belichick, he was coaching up the players on the sideline. And every time the camera showed Carroll, he was watching the game, chomping on his gum with his hands on his knees.

I was born at Des Moines. Loved Iowa, but not the humidity. I can still remember those three-shirt days. :) What I do miss are Maid-Rites. A couple of them and a cold beer will set you right.
Never heard of Maid- Rites. Googled them. Jesus, they do look damn good!

It is obvious that BB is a football savant, but I think it's likely he is literally a genius as well.

Even if we hadn't had to endure the insults and accusations of lesser fans and teams, it might be necessary to walk away from the NFL* after BB retires, since, we've been spoiled by watching the best for so long, anything else will pale in comparison.

On a level playing field, I think a BB-coached team beats a Vince Lombardi coached team. Things were simpler for Lombardi regarding salary caps, drafts and such; he'd have to prove to me he could hang with BB.

BB, is simply, the greatest football coach who has ever lived.

Thought experiment: Let's say for the sake of fantasy aliens come and attack our planet. They are far more advanced than us, but they are interested in competition and will challenge us to a sport of their devising. We know nothing of this sport, but we are told that we will have no problem physically playing it and that we have one year to learn it before we are challenged to play their best team for the freedom of our planet. We must choose our coach now, before being taught the sport.

Is there any other candidate worth considering for this task other than Bill Belichick? Anyone else with the ruthless will, flexible mind, encyclopedic knowledge and curiosity? The ability to boil complex problems down into simple components that 45 people can easily digest? The fearlessness to make an unorthodox call and live with the result? If there's a footnote on page 1,245 in the sport's rulebook that would help us win, Belichick would be the one to find it.

I'd say the only US sports candidates to coach this game would be Belichick and Popovich. The rest can watch from the stands.

I can only imagine after the contest the aliens will be suffering from Belichick Derangement Syndrome and the aliens will be screaming the only word of their language that we'll understand...."cheaters".

This would occur after BB's team came from two nurls behind and the left wemblock performed an uncontested thrigwedgie for the winning margin.

The aliens will complain bitterly that it was an illegal play, but BB will point out that aliens themselves used the same play when subjugating the inhabitants of an obscure planet orbiting a red dwarf in the Andromeda galaxy.

We're on to Antares.

This is what frosts me the most about framegate - a mob of shortsighted, bitter fools doing everything in their power to make darkness of what should be the heart of a Golden Age of the sport. For shame!!! We may never see his like again. I sure don't expect to.

Great article, most of which we know, interestingly is that as much as some want him to go "all in" this year or any year it displays his penchant for planning for the future.. that every move made this year, is not only for this year, but for the future as well.. every move is calculated and part of a grander scheme.

I was impressed with him standing with Richard Seymour and others we viewed as adversaries... however it is the business side of football...

Unfortunately, this will not be read by the naysayers and doubters, they are content with relying on half truths..

A fascinating discussion.

Keep in mind, VL was the first coach to utilize 8mm to record practices and games from various angles. When he was OC for the Giants, he had Wellington Mara take Polaroids of the defense, put them in a sock and send them down via a wire. He was the first to do so.

VL may/may not have BBs brains but in terms of leveraging technology to gain advantage, he was an innovator.

He was also incredible at evaluating talent.

IMO if a coach or player is great but from a different era, if you give them enough time and the tools of the current era, they will still be great.

Same is reversed. If you dropped BB in the 50s and 60s he would still kick ass.
