Sign the Beast LXIX: La'el Collins - do the Pats have a shot if he is cleared?

Don't lose the plot here. We are talking about a player who involved in an active murder investigation, who has had over a week to clear himself and has not done so. With the latest statements today from the police and his own lawyer being anything but definitive and encouraging.

If he had anything pointing to his innocence, his lawyer would be crowing about it. I mean, did this guy break up with ex-girlfriend months ago? Or Friday afternoon?

I'm not sure you understand how this stuff works.

No chance for the Pats to sign him, any team that signs him smells of desperation, we do not need to do this..

The Rae Carruth comparison is apropos..

How would it be desperation to get a top 20ish talent as a UDFA? Teams should be rolling out the red carpet, its a free top draft pick AND his contract probably can't crack the top 51.

0 desperation, it's a flier for a potential stud.

The ONLY issue I have is that teams are maybe moving too fast given the situation is still very uncertain, but the teams are also probably in contact with officials, lawyers, agents, and know the kid a lot better than any of us.

According to Collins' agent, he isn't meeting with teams at this time.

Sounds like a play on words, because at least 2 teams (Rex + a Dolphins players crew) have already met with him to recruit.

His agent are not officially speaking with the clubs. The Dolphins are sending players, not team executives. Sounds like Collins is just going to get a lot of free meals.

You're absolutely right, but I think he'll have his mind made up before he officially speaks to anyone, there won't be ANY negotiating involved really if I'm not mistaken due to the CBA and nearly all 32 teams will be calling once he's in the clear.

Since he isn't going to break the bank this year, wouldn't going to a team with a chance to win a Superbowl as well as getting to play the the GOAT QB and HC be some intoxicating selling points?

This is similar to the Rae Carruth situation so any hope for Collins to get his name cleared quickly is a longshot as they are probably not looking at him as the one who murdered her but more as someone involved in a conspiracy to murder

The Patriots can't have any involvement with him, one former player spending life in prison is more than enough.

Watched one of those one hour true crime shows. Some obscure Ex-Pats player shot a guy for some bimbo and is doing life

I say embrace Satan and go for a third!

IDK, I think there will be a lot teams that won't even consider talking to him until he is officially cleared. Unless his dream team offers him the best contract he can get under the CBA and tells him he has a real shot at winning the starting tackle job, I think he won't make up his mind until everyone throws their hats into the ring.

He needs to think long term because of the money he lost. He needs to go to the place where he can start the fastest at the tackle position so he can cash in when he gets to the point of where he can demand a real free agent contract. The highest paid tackle makes about $3-5 million a year than the highest paid guard. So he is going to want to have a shot to play tackle.

This depends.... Can he play man-to-man press?

These days, this overshadows the traditional 'can he rush the passer' criterium.

Here's why he is not "meeting with teams" (cough, cough):

Teams can’t meet with La’el Collins, yet

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/05/05/teams-cant-meet-with-lael-collins-yet/

of possible interest from above:

"Collins has withdrawn from LSU, and final exams have not concluded there yet. (Finals are happening this week.) So teams can’t visit a player at his campus or residence.

There’s possibly a loophole in the rule, if for example Bills coach Rex Ryan met with Collins not on campus or at his residence but at a local Applebee’s. But that seems to be too easy of a fix to be permitted."

Is it time for another Well's investigation?

We will have a need at tackle next year, this year he's not going to make a million anywhere, he should look for his opportunity to cash in in a few years. Playing in the spotlights, primetime and playoffs helps his cause, playing for the Jaguars of life don't.

Two AFCE teams will have met with him after today. Either the rule breaking is more brazen than ever, or PFT needs to do a bit more research.

It wasn't the Pats, so "No".

I don't necessarily agree, Joe Thomas, Alex Mack, the Raiders tackle who went to AZ in 2014, etc, they're all cashing in on huge contracts playing for nobodies.

Teams look under every rock at the NFL level, at least for talent along the lines. WR's are the ones who end their careers playing for teams without a QB though. Collins should choose the team with a need, or a near-future need. If Solder isn't our future, Collins could play the 3rd Tackle like Solder did with Matt Light making his last run, both Solder (concussion) and Vollmer (back/lower body) have injury history and cannot always be relied upon.

He should be a better replacement than Cannon should something happen, and Flemming is a great 6th OL for heavy sets but does he have a full time position anywhere?

And Collins won't be able to sign until the Ted Wells investigation is complete. Kid might want to get his resume ready.
