Sign the Beast XVIII - If Patriots cannot re-sign McCourty, is Rahim Moore a possibility?

So, last year Chung was OK because he was playing alongside McCourty, and Harmon could substitute on passing downs.

Now, Chung is SO GOOD that Harmon/Ryan can replace McCourty because they have Chung opposite.
Apparently, Chung is now a safety who can play on all downs.

I'm not buying. I think that there is significant loss in replacing McCourty/Harmon with Ryan/Harmon.

I understand that many don't believe this. Perhaps, that is why they wouldn't pay McCourty 6/$60M. I wouldn't even bother with McCourty if I thought that there wouldn't be a big loss with him gone. Why would Belichick pay someone $9.5M a year if his replacement would be almost as effective?

and mccourty wants 9.5m.

not a chance he returns.

No one knows what McCourty wants or doesn't want. All we know is that Belichick decided that the franchise tag was better used on Gostkowski.

After all is said and done, McCourty may be playing for the patriots at $8M in the guaranteed years, in a contract signed in the next couple of days or in the next couple of weeks. Or McCourty may sign with someone else on Tuesday evening.

Just BTW, it is unlikely that McCourty has already agreed with a contract with someone else. After all such a contract could be proudly leaked.

Sterling Moore and Darius Butler are about our speed.

I feel like if the Seahawks had won the SB, a sizable number of posters here would be screaming for Harmon to be cut for doing nothing to break up the miracle Kearse catch. (Similar to Samuel "giving up" on Tyree)

I don't think Harmon is an heir apparent replacement for McCourty but then again Devin wasn't hot **** the moment he took over the FS position either. Had a real problem with seam routes blowing by him as I recall.

I do like Harmon's game too... I think he can be 80% of what McCourty is.

This is exactly what I've been saying. Down to the percentage. Great minds think alike.

If SEA had won, I don't think that very many posters would be saying that we were OK at safety with HARMON-CHUNG-WILSON-EBNER and the hope of RYAN converting.

One play make our safeties so much better. :) And one play makes Dennard expendable, or part of the mix if Revis is gone.

We had one of the best secondaries in the NFL in Revis-Browner-Arrington-McCourty-Chung, with occasional contributes from the backups. Losing any of these five would be a major hit.

lol I was just throwing out an estimate, it's hard to quantify a player's skill as a percentage...

I mean, I would prefer to have McCourty first and foremost, but at what cost? For $7 million per, yeah. More? I'm not sure. Furthermore, is the drop off from McCourty to Harmon justifiable when considering the huge difference in cost? I'm inclined to say yes if the team thinks they can find better uses for $7+ million on defensive line help.

People on here kinda get pissed at me when I say this but I like Harmon alot. I think its not justifiable to give #32 that kind of money when the drop off won't be that significant. We need to keep funds available to sign Jones, Hightower, and Collins.

I say let Mccourty go out and get the money that he has earned and deserves. I hope he gets 10 million dollars aav. I don't even want to say what I think it would be worth to keep him because it would come across as disrespectful.

What is interesting about the possibility of replacing Devon McCourty isn't a matter of what S Bill is looking for, but WHERE Bill is going to find him. I think Bill believes that just like the nature of the game itself has changed over recent years, so has the skill set you need to play the safety position.

It was not a coincidence that Bill turned to McCourty in 2012 to play safety and kept him there even when it hurt him at the CB position. I know there are people here who feel that McCourty is a failed CB who has succeeded at S. But I don't. He earned that Pro bowl selection as a rookie, his move to S wasn't a demotion, but BB's realization that he needed a different kind of skill set at the S position in response to the changing passing game in the NFL

Because the game has changed so has the skilsl necessary to play S in today's NFL. Its also no coincidence that BB kept on looking for S's in the draft who had also played some CB. I think Bill understood that S's HAVE to be skilled coverage DB's and the old SS skill set belonged to players who would find themselves limited only to specific game situations.

So if in the end, we lose McCourty, I don't see him replacing him with some of the names mentioned in FA. Too often they are guys who are more like the old SS mold. Personally I see Ryan being picked as the ultimate replacement for McCourty. He has excellent ball skills with 7 picks in his first 2 years. He has excellent zone skills, and decent man skills. I don't think he has the range that McCourty has, but it's close.

IIRC the Pats in recent years have been among the top defenses in the league in preventing big plays, especially in the middle of the field. While it doesn't show up in the stats, a lot of the reason for that success can be attributed to McCourty. Hopefully someone like Ryan can duplicate that kind of success.

Bill should've tagged McCourty in order to give both sides more time to work out a long-term deal.
Neither Harmon, Ryan or Wilson - or any free agent - comes even remotely close to providing what
McCourty provides.

Are there very many posters saying the Patriots would be ok with that even after the SB win?
