Patriots No. 1 team in Boston and New England

The Red Sox play all home games smack dab in the middle of Boston and the Pats play their home games out in the boondocks 30 miles away.

Yet, the Pats own Boston. OOOKKKAAAYYY.

Heres another one for you. The Jets own New York City. Just ask their fanbase.

Heh, OK. I raise you five more in addition to the initial link from today:

Red Sox suck...Bruins kick ass and make playoffs every year. (I was at that game 7 fiasco) But pats are defiantly #1
LOL, every hockey team makes the playoffs every year!

Your wife is a keeper.

Thanks Tune, we both appreciate it.
And, she thoroughly enjoys watching Jason Worth, along with a few thousand other women who will be in the stands today.

Im not buying it.

The Sox roster can change from terrible to good in a few moves

it makes sense though...right now the only two good teams in boston are the Bruins and the Patriots.

its their prolonged success that makes the Pats number one since Boston/new england loves their successful sports teams.

red sox stink this year, and the celtics are in the midst of a long rebuild after having success from 2007-2012

So what now? Debate over? Again, please provide EVIDENCE that this is the case. You'll forgive me if I don't exactly take your word for it.

Kontra, no of course the "debate" isn't over, if there is even a debate at all.
I travel a lot, in the US and some in Europe. I see a lot more Sox hats than any other sports clothing, other than the NY Yankee hats which now, I think, are usually about city pride, more than the Yankees (hard to know, but I guess based on the age of the wearer).

My view: the Sox fandom is older, more deeply rooted, and more widespread than the Pats fandom. The strength and connection was made through the decades of championship futility. The Pats fandom connection is made through fifteen years of unsurpassed excellence (possible exception: San Antonio Spurs) and the defensiveness that comes from being at the top and always being under attack. Very different types of loyalty and commonality. Apples and oranges in many ways.

Add in the Celtics (similar to the Pats, but longer ago) and Bruins (hockey fans are a different breed everywhere) and the individual heroes in all four sports, and New England sports fans are incredibly lucky to have this diversity. Boston is the Smithsonian of pro sports, with richness of many types in buildings next door to each other. In the history of pro sports, no other region has ever had anything to even approach it.

I live outside of New England, and see about ten Patriots logos, bumper stickers, shirts, hats, etcetera for every one of the Red Sox'. Similarly I hear far more people talking about their Pats over the course of a year than are talking about their Sox.

That may not have been the case 25-30 years ago, but it is most definitely the way it is today. If relocated fans are the criteria, then from my perspective the Patriots are Boston's and New England's number one team by a wide margin.

I believe this was established years ago, but it's nice to see a longtime baseball authority acknowledge the obvious one short year after the Bankofamericasox win a World Series at home:

http://bostonherald.com/sports/columnists/steve_buckley/2014/09/buckley_patriots_earn_1_more_win

"If you believe the Pats were already No. 1 anyway, and various polls say this is indeed the case, then I’m saying you ain’t seen nothing yet."

wow, still beating that drum??? why cant we love all Boston sports...why choose

This is a weak article. Based on this article, the Bruins, the Boston Marathon, and Amanda Bynes are more popular in Boston than the Patriots. The Red Sox were #1 on Google trends the period of September through December last year because they were in and won the World Series.

The fact is this a Patriots town and has been for close to a decade. A preseason Patriots game where Brady and the starters don't play can outdraw a Red Sox/Yankees game with both teams in the Pennant hunt.

The fact that old time sports writers who are more Red Sox focused like Bob Ryan and Steve Buckley are conceding that this is a Patriots town, it is time for the Red Sox diehards to do the same.

lol why do you care so much? i dont get it. if the pats were a non playoff team without brady belichik. where do you think they would rate then? i dont have a horse in this race i love them all the same.

I enjoy both sports. They provide different pleasures.

At breakfast this morning, for example, my wife said, "Hey, the Nats have a late afternoon home game today. Want to go?" We spontaneously grabbed a couple off of Stubhub, great seats not far from the field, and will have an easy, relaxed late afternoon surrounded largely by people doing the same. It's the difference between going to the symphony and going to a rock concert. If you know how to appreciate both, you can enjoy both.

Good thing you didn't go last night. The game lasted about 5 hours and I thought I was going to die of heat stroke.

FWIW: I wear a Red Sox hat that my wife likes but I have not watched an MLB game in decades.

In FL south of Tamper unlike jmt57 I see FAR more Sox hats and few if any Patriots hats, etc. Of course I am in the FL elephant graveyard which might be biased towards the older Sox demographic.

I like the patriots waay more than the sox, but the red sox have won 3 WS since 2004. Patriots have none in that time frame.

Bruins are also really good, a top 5 team in the NHL. they just need to stay healthy. If seidenberg played last year they could have won.

I'm beating no drum, and nobody suggested "choosing" anything. Just sharing a very topical point of discussion.

Yes, heading out shortly and very concerned about that. Am on the visitor's side so at least will get shade the whole time. But this is why the tickets were plentiful this morning.
