Gropp

He looked good but let's temper it a bit. It was a vanilla set of plays against a vanilla set of players. It's like saying he played "Chopsticks" on the piano very well. He's got a lot of work before he should be anointed. It was promising if he can get comfortable with the system and continue to get better but it's one preseason game.

FTR-I didn't start the thread to suggest Gropp is taking Brady's job or heading to canton, but more to say that his performance was striking in terms of his comfort level and accuracy. He didn't seem the least bit fazed and played really well in his first time out, and in all honesty i have never seen mallett show that kind of poise, comfort with the offense, or accuracy at any time. I thought Mallett did real damage in his opportunity and now it will be a battle for the rest of pre-season. And while I am sure Belichick is happy with Gropp's performance i think his real hope was that Mallett would shine and give him some opportunity to get something for him, and that was also seriously damaged last night. Both Cousins and Gropp looked like much better QB's in their time on the field.

The fact that the kid looks to have some really nice skills, both physically and mentally, is most exciting to see. The kid looked like he belonged and that the moment wasn't too big for him. Considering it was his first pro game and he's not far into that pro career, what's not to like here?

Why would you not want the backup QB to get any regular season snaps? That seems the height of stupidity as Brady gets older and becomes more likely to get dinged up for a game or two. The backup needs to be ready to play.

Welcome to New England.

Tyms looked better than Boyce.
Garopollo is not the backup QB. He is the 3rd string QB and if he is playing that means Brady and Mallett are out of the game.

Tyms played against players who will be lucky to make the practice squad. As did Garopollo, college football level competition. I am happy to see them both do well but I am not going to put the carriage before the horse.

It should have been 10-13...yeah, Garp played exceedingly well.

Mallet has never gone 10-13 EVER in his life.
Mallett was 12-19 for 164 yards and 1 touchdowns in his first preseason game. The reaction was similar then as it is for Garopollo today.

One advantage of being Tom Brady is that you've lived with and played in the same offense for 15 years under live fire. As complicated as it's grown over the years,Tom speaks it fluently and can execute it at lightning speed.

One advantage of being Jimmy G is that the coaching staff will give you the simplest gameplan on your first day in live action. Not to take away from his poise and accuracy and speed, which he demonstrated amply, but...

One disadvantage of being Ryan Mallet is you have to play Tom Brady's offense, which you've practiced and practiced for years in the parking lot, but never take out on the highway.

As much as I liked JGs performance, we can't truly know until he's executing a real offense with starters against starters. And I'd be slow to ding Mallet without same, and a chance to acclimate to the live action. Sometimes I wonder if BB is as confident in what he's got as some of the posters.;)

JG: 9/13 157 yards 1 td 0 int

Bortles: 7/11 117 yards 0 td 0 int
Manziel: playing tomorrow
Bridgewater: 6/13 49 yards 0 td 0 int
Carr: 10/16 74 yards 0 td 1 int

When's the Jimmy4 coming out?

JG looked very good in his first on field, clock running NFL experience. Whether it was against backups or the backups to the backups is immaterial. Even the least effective of the NFL is likely superior to the best of college. Add in the fact that reports of his camp effectiveness have been shaky, this makes his standout performance even more significant and positive.
But this was only one single experience. Even if JG plays this well in the next three weeks/next three on field, clock running experiences it still lacks the gravity to suggest he is a 'gamer' or ready/will be an NFL QB.
As another poster mentioned, I wish BB would change his policy and allow the backup QBs to get significantly more playing time during blow out games (I'm, ahem, expecting many of them this season!!!).

Deer in headlight look in the pocket do not complete 9 of 13 passes. Don't know what the hell Volin talking about.

Not many people do know what Volin is talking about half the time.

I actually loved his stuff writing in Miami...but since coming over here I think he tries too hard to analyse rather than report. Greg Bedard at times did the same thing but the difference being was he was unbelievably knowledgable of the sport.

Sometimes reporters need to stick do just that and not be too analytical.

Garoppolo did things that I liked.

He moved in the pocket real well when he needed to.

He was also very accurate on long passes. Of the 4 long passes that he threw, 3 were right on the money and the 4th was just a few inches too long. I can't remember Brady doing that more often in his entire career.

It's still early though.

Well, if God forbid we need a backup QB for a few games, I have no faith in Mallet. All of my memories of him are the same. He hikes the ball, take two steps back, then panics. That's basically all I ever see him do.

Yeah, the offensive line wasn't spectacular, but he didn't do anything.

He's a young guy too. He' didn't just have a 37th birthday. Mallet can't side step a pass rusher? His decision making with pass rushers around him looks Mark Sanchez bad.. Not to dump on him, but when I see him clearly freaking out once the pass rush passes him on the sides, I see buttfumble potential. I see flashes of Sanchez in the way Mallet deals with danger.

There were a few occasions when he should have been able to avoid a guy with a really small adjustment and instead it looks like he just freezes or panics and bumbles his way right into the danger.

If he keeps playing like that this preseason, I see no reason why we shouldn't just dump him for the kid and just run 2 quarterbacks on our roster.

"Knowing the system" doesn't mean much if you can't execute it in the slightest.

I missed a little bit of the game but what I saw was just bad.

Little OT, but that was such a filthy play by Brady.

If by filthy you mean awesome, yes, yes it was.

It was dirty. Look how the knee bends and extends again. Pretty clear intent to injure there from a guy that has probably known since childhood not to slide cleats up. I never really cared either way because Suggs attempted to take a shot at Brady's repaired knee in 2009 too but it was still dirty.

Against the Ravens it's obvious self defense

It bends and extends again because Reed's right foot catches Brady's right foot and kicks it up higher while passing over him. There was no intent by Brady to injure him; he was trying to protect himself from getting hit on the way down into his slide (though ill-advisedly). Look at how Brady turns his right shoulder and face away from Reed, who is barreling in full speed.

I only wish that was Suggs and not Ed Reed. Poor guy says that incident caused his hip injury. Or whatever it was.

Hate to be that guy, but Garoppolo was playing against scrubs. I would like to see him against starter level competition before I get too high on him. That said, he did look more decisive and confident than Mallett ever has.
He was also playing WITH scrubs against scrubs and was clearly the best player on the field

I agree with you. If anything Mallett was the one looking like a deer in headlights in my opinion. As usual Volin continues to make me wonder how he got the job.

Volin also never makes me question how I've never hit my "10 free articles/month" quota either.
