The McCourty hate train?...I never suspected Triumph was behind it the whole time....and look!...what's that tied gagged to the tracks with rope? OMG!!! It's Amendola!

the plot thickens....

Triumph is one of the conductors of the Hate Train, period, he has been bashing Belichick and this team as long as i can remember and he would be crushed if they won another Lombardi with Belichick at the helm.

Of course, we wouldn't choose McCourty over Revis. HOWEVER, signing McCourty now will indeed decrease the likelihood of signing Revis next year. I understand that we could do both, and hopefully will.

In any case, there is no guarantee that we could sign Revis next year, even at $15M a year, so Belichick is taking care of business.

Someone posted that DMC isnt a top 10 safety? Guy was an all pro at a position he had 2 years of experience at.

WTF?

For those who aren't aware of it, Triumph has claimed he can do a better job than Belichick, and anyone who believes that is mentally ill.

So you're asking us NOT to believe you???

I don't get the McCourty cir#lejerk. Guy's a good player, but when was the last time he made a big play in a big game? He forced fumbles in weeks 4 & 5 and had a pick in week 9. In the playoffs he made little to no impact. For all the talk about how smart and good he is, McCourty, in his four year career, has exactly TWO interceptions and ZERO forced fumbles in games after Thanksgiving, including playoffs (i'm not counting two picks his rookie year in late season games vs MIA and NYJ, which the Pats won by a combined 83-10. Where was the big play in the playoffs vs Denver last season or vs Baltimore the year before? Same with Mayo, good player, but when was the last time he made a game changing play in a big game?

Why would signing McCourty decrease the chance of resigning Revis? I would think it would make it easier.

According the the NFL And his peers he is a great player.

Also, "big plays" arent always the best measuring stick. Consistency wins

Nobody really did much in the Denver game. I dont know why you would single him out.

Since PFF's stats are next to useless, I'll just quote the most important part of the article...

FOXBORO, Mass. — When Devin McCourty moved from cornerback to safety last season, a change occurred: The Patriots stopped allowing so many big plays.

Opposing teams are still willing to challenge New England on plays thrown over 20 yards, they’re just not hitting nearly as many of those bombs down the field. Over the last three years, opposing teams have completed just 35.2 percent of passes over 20 yards with 10 touchdowns and nine interceptions in games when McCourty plays safety. When McCourty’s at cornerback or out of the game, opposing teams complete 43.4 percent of passes with 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Again, many of you are not giving him enough credit. Perhaps you guys would like a return to the days of James Ihedigbo and Patrick Chung? The pass defense looked REAL good back then.

Committing $10M a year to a safety will definitely impact that cap. It is really that simple.

Yup. Thats how I see it.

Or said a different way: in my book every pass defended IS a big play

HUH??

Great players make great plays at critical times......

Where would the Pats be without:

Ty Laws int in SB 36
Vinateri's kick in the snow
Bruschi stealing the ball from the Colts receiver
Samuels picking off Manning in the closing moments of SB...opps nevermind, it went through his hands.

Which is the point exactly if Assante catches that ball, he is superstar and would have gone down in Patriots history. Which is the point about McCourty, he never makes a big play! Sure he is solid player, but never makes the big play that turns a game around. The Pats only lost to the Colts by 8 points, so what if instead of Peyton going down the field and scoring, McCourty did pick him off and run it back? Are you saying that is over rated as opposed to him making a tackle five yards down the field?

I am saying that you cant just label someone "not a great player" because you dont witness or recall specific "great plays."

Are you saying that the NFL awards the all-pro label to just solid payers?

Your arguments on this topic have been really bad. They've been so bad, in fact, that I honestly thought you were going full-on sarcasm.

McCourty should be at a point that he should be picking off some of those deep in cuts and all he does is make the tackle after the catch. He sucked at corner and gave up the most yards in the history of the NFL. Average at best as a safety. Like it has been stated in the thread where is the big play? Where is the big hit?

What gets overlooked in the Pats last SB win when they beat the Eagles was Rodney Harrison's three game playoff series. He made key INTs in all three games which helped the Pats to win the SB. McCourty to be paid as a top safety needs to do that for his team.

But, the cap will continue to go up, probably by quite a bit and Brady's salary will come down. Nevermind Hernandez money coming off the books. I am not so sure that the Patriots cannot have both.
